Ah, I'm not really a big fan of NO EXIT. The production is bad (not as bad as anything pre-Alder, though) and the high-pitched vocals are just the sign of youthful showoffitis. Not really my thing. Luckilly by PARALLELS Ray found his niche, a more refined, controlled mid-to-high range, with no longer a reliance on super-high histronics. I always found that kind of annoying, actually. I;ll agree with you, 6:00 dude, that his current takes on material from that CD are far better than what was on record.
'Part of the Machine' is great, mostly the instrumental parts. INcredible musicial performances there. The vocals and vocal melodies are just not that great... didn't feel natural and certainly not memorable, unlike, say... guess? Yeah, 'Through Different Eyes' where it all seemed to come together.
That all said, I do think PS is great!

A sign of a great band(no fanboy comments... ), their worst album...whatever it is for each person, is still awesome! #rockin#

Well, I wish I could agree, fanboy dude... but I was never a fan of Arch-era Fates. And even No Exit, which I think is good, is underwelming, but everything post-No Exit, is great.

All of their albums are awesome, up to their last two, which if you ask me, as a long long time fan of this band, were very disappointing. No Exit is a masterpiece in it's own right. Ray came into the fold on that album, the lyrical content and song writing that Jim executed on that album is excellent. It's raw, not overproduced, and Ray stepped into hard-to-fill shoes- probably the hardest to fill in metal. Love that album, and it never tires. Just as Guardian & Spectre never do- complete masterpieces. I commend Jim Matheos for those albums, as they're as fresh to listen to today as they were when I first bought them brand new on record. Great reissue of Guardian btw...love the extra stuff!

weird, No Exit is easily the worst album in Alder's era, just above Brocken. And that's an absolute fact, jack.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree with Mr. Ben here on this one... No Exit is nice and all, but definitely my least favorite from the Alder era, and Brocken just doesn't really have any character to it, pretty typical if you ask me. Although I do really like "Damnation" and the title track. -Kerrick

Perfect Symmetry your least favorite? Wow I think that album Rules!! A masterpiece!! I love Part of the Machine! How come no one is mentioning that proggy masterpiece! This album blew me away when I bought it and it still does to this day. It is by far their most progressive and defines the post Arch era Fates sound. (that is until Aresti left then every thing changed again) Every song is a gem in my book. I mean Through Different Eyes, Static Acts, The Arena, At Fates Hands, Nothing Left to Say. And while I'm at it!!! hehe! A World Apart has to be one of the most adventerous tunes they've ever created. This album is easily in my top 3 Fates albums. I'm starting to really like Part of the Machine, and I dig a coupla other songs from Perfect Symmetry (particularly Nothing Left to Say and Through Different Eyes) but I'd still rank it slightly lower than Brocken and a fair bit higher than FWX. I find Zonder's drumming to be way too busy when it shouldn't be at times, though his chops are jaw-dropping, and by the same token there's a bit too much wankery that seems entirely outside of the context of the songs, in particular At Fate's Hands. Regarding No Exit, it is pretty much pitch-perfect speed/trad metal. Anarchy Divine is, along with Without a Trace, their best 'simple' fast track and I find the whole thing to be remarkably consistent. Strong writing, excellent riffs, and this incredible precision make it a favourite of mine. And for the record, my two favourite Fates albums are TSW and ATG, but I'd rate NE, Parallels, APSOG, and Disconnected very highly. And on the subject of FWX, it has some very solid tracks and even some great ones, but overall it is most definitely my least fav from Fates Warning. Too much empty space, and some ugly production niggles.

Ditto, I agree with Ben as well... Personally I don't even like Fates with John Arch much, something about his voice... not going to start THAT thread here, though. Hmmmm... not sure if I agree, Apparition. I found most of At Fates Hands very tasteful and not self-indulgence, atleast on the level of Dream Theater (who I love.)

My feel: FWX was somewhat artificial...it wasnt them although the tracks wasnt week in itself..sort of the same feel as Inside Out.. Also a bit to much influated with Tool and Q. It`s been done before. The most amazing about the album is Rays singing. I miss the intuitive genius of albums like Perfect Symmetry and Parallels, maybe an Aresti...FW`s current direction worked with Disconected but not as good with this one. Looking forward to a new album soon..always exiting with this band - one never knows with this band because the can do things that few other bands can do!

Anyone else think the lyrics are just ridiculous on FWX? I don't understand what happened... Half of Disconnected was rather weak, then FWX comes out and it was worse than I could've imagined. Of all bands I'd expect to go industrial, FW wasn't one of them :/ I don't understand how the musicianship could take such a severe turn.
I think Jim definitely still has it in him though. Look at the John Arch EP. He has writing credits on Relentless, though I'm not sure how much of the music he actually wrote. I think there's still a possibility for a turn-around.

Industrial eh?
Explain what you think "industrial" means, and maybe I might stop laughing. Were you expecting some ridiculous fantasy-laced metaphor tracks like the John Arch era?

As a Fates fan for the past twenty years...I still get chills listening to No Exit...I think its one of the greatest metal albums ever. Period. Now, I also happen to think Perfect Symmetry defined the entire band when that came out...Come on you guys, can you remember listening to Part of the Machine for the first time? It was incredible although it was on cassette naturally > (I by the way also listen to the John Arch era Fates albums a ton also.)
