Yeah, "Left Here" and "Wish" are incredible songs.
Both ENGINE CD's are great. I like the first one better - but if you like nu metal with a real singer, say, imagine the Deftones with Ray singing - then you'll really enjoy them. HIGHLY recommended. Their DEBUT CD is just killer. Then of course, there's Scott Mosher's new DEEP HORIZON CD...

I enjoy just about all of "FWX", but my favorites are about the same as everyone else's..."Left Here", "Wish", "Heal Me"...and one of their best songs period, "River Wide...", great tune! "Crawl" is a good rocker IMO, kind of mainstream sounding as is "Simple Human". "Stranger..." and "Another Perfect Day" are pretty good and "A Handful of Doubt" is a great ballady type. It did take a little while for it to all sink in and stick with me, and again...missing that epic feel, and as some others have mentioned the dual guitar and/or keys...it falls stightly short of the previous 2 albums. But that's not necessarily a bad thing as they were awesome for me, so still a very good album. I think I'm the only one on the board who prefers "Superholic" to the s/t Engine, not by much really. Maybe just more songs to choose from and a little longer overall gives it the edge. Both very good and I always say they should have gotten massive radio play with those albums, wtf is wrong with the mainstream media???...

Thats an interesting thing to say... I never really see FW songs as ballads, persay--because they never end up being about "ballad" esque topics, ya know? Handful of Doubt, to me, is in no way a ballad as it doesn't have that standard balladry idea-- its so dark and contemplative--like most of FW. Just a thought...
Does FW really write ballads?

I guess even if they're not 'love' songs, I would still consider songs like that one as well as APSOG parts 6 and 9 and "Island in the Stream" to be rock ballads. Just a way of saying a slower, softer song. I believe "A Handful of Doubt" is about a divorce, so that could be classified as a love song, albeit very dark and sorrowful. Welcome to the board... Seth

This is probably my least favourite from Fates (along with Perfect Symmetry), but it's still rather solid. The production annoys.
I love Disconnected though, the fact that it's not even in my top five is indicative of how awesome the FW catalogue is.

Agreed... I would say "Islands in the Stream", APSOG #9 and "The Road Goes On Forever" are as close to ballads as you can expect from Fates.

This is probably my least favourite from Fates (along with Perfect Symmetry) "Perfect Symmetry"... Just kiddin', but man I love that album...I listened to it to death when it came out and then didn't have a copy for some time. Finally picked it up sometime ago and it blew me away all over again... #rockin# Agreed... I would say "Islands in the Stream", APSOG #9 and "The Road Goes On Forever" are as close to ballads as you can expect from Fates. Damn, "Island in the Stream" is a great song...as the slower type songs go that may be one of my favorite ones in general... #hardrock#

Man, I lost my original posts here. Oh well, the jist of it was, "Through Different Eyes" is one of my all time favorite FW songs and still serves as the proto-typical FW song. A classic mesh of progressive excellence and refined accessibility. Awesome stuff. A pristine example of incredible songsmanship and creativity. From PERFECT SYMMETRY, too, the last CD of Rays high vocal histronics, lol!

Perfect Symmetry is the Fates album I got most recently (other than Still Life), and I've been so obsessed with the others that I haven't given it a fair shot. But in the four or five spins I've given it, I find it too disjointed and cold. There aren't that many great melodies, and the albums that bookend it simply do what they do so much better.

It's definitely, PS, a machine-like CD in places. PS really comes to life during songs like "At Fates Hands", "Through Different Eyes" and "The Arena" where there's a large variety in dynamics, less vocal screaming and histronics, and a stronger concern for progressive elements as well as song structure. It does serve as a good pre-cursor to their future direction, especially "Through Different Eyes" which COULD'VE been on Parallels and feel right in place.

Spun "FWX" today at work, I think that "Stranger..." might be the only song that just doesn't quite do it for me. It just seems to simple for them maybe? It's still not bad, but the rest of the album is great...sounded good after not hearing it for awhile.
All this talk about "Perfect Symmetry" and I just had to crank it out in the truck, still love that album..."At Fates Hands" is just such a cool song, great moody...yet still heavy stuff. "Chasing Time" is beautiful and "Nothing Left to Say" always gives me chills at the end...Ray was unreal back then. Not to mention the opening of that song... #rockin# The rest is just great rockin' stuff.

Yeah, the only thing I don't really care for on PS, is the super high pitched screams (I'm fairly certain I heard Ray mention he cringes at some of his old vocal stylings) and vocal histronics. When he's more restrained and concentrating on vocal delivery like "TDE", "CT" and "AFH" the band is at its best.

Personally, I love Ray's uber-high vocals on No Exit, so that's not really a problem in my book. It makes me happy that he can still do justice to those songs live these days, albeit in a more restrained manner.

I'll generally be in a nostalgic mood when I go back to the old thrash, power and prog bands...so while I'm not a huge fan of the high metal screams anymore, I do still like to hear them in the old music. And Ray was amazing when it came to that, on those 2 albums especially. "There's a child SCREEEAAAAMING, with NOTHING LEFT TO SAAAAAAYYYYYY"The end of that song just kills, unreal.... #rockin# #hardrock# #vocalist#

A masterpiece!! I love Part of the Machine! How come no one is mentioning that proggy masterpiece! This album blew me away when I bought it and it still does to this day. It is by far their most progressive and defines the post Arch era Fates sound. (that is until Aresti left then every thing changed again) Every song is a gem in my book. I mean Through Different Eyes, Static Acts, The Arena, At Fates Hands, Nothing Left to Say. And while I'm at it!!! hehe! A World Apart has to be one of the most adventerous tunes they've ever created. This album is easily in my top 3 Fates albums.
