Great post - this is light-hearted poetry at it´s best. But you have homework to do; Lost Horizon was a band from Gothenburg with the greatest power-vocalist of all time - Daniel Heiman. Soulful and most of all spiritual. You actually belive what his singing about. How rare...

Lost Horizon??? My friend had one of their cds (the one with the purple cover, I think it was their second album) and I remember listening to it. Personally, I didn't like it at all. There was one decent song in my opinion then the rest just seemed to be power metal drivel. Other than the corny lyrics and poor songwriting, the main thing thing that really turned me off was the singer. Couldn't stand him. Different strokes for different folks I guess haha. For me, the best power metal is Redemption (don't know if that is TRUE power metal though), old Angra, Shaaman, and Sonata Artica. -Kerrick

He he. Their second cd isn´t that good, but the first one has some really cool power metal drivel songs on it. Corny lyrics but i can´t believe you don´t like those vocals...?
Have you heard Archetype? I like them. Kamelot has a great song, Forever and that first Masterplan cd is considered to be classic.

Archetype's Dawning album was kinda decent. VERY Iced Earth-ish.
Becoming the Archetype is one of those annoying bands who exist mearly to become the new Stryper. Did I mention I hate Christian bands and their fans?

Did I mention I hate Christian bands and their fans? Ok. I won't argue with you about BTA. That's what you think, that's cool. I don't agree, but who cares? Although I'm curious why you hate Christian bands and their fans. Now maybe I'm opening a huge can of worms and this will just become a name calling mess, but I'd like to have a mature discussion/debate about it. I think I'll start a new thread in the politics section right now... Or if anyone wants to, I guess you could always pm me.

Actually, as a whole, for me, with one, huge, exception, Forever, Kamelot. Suck. I can only deal with small parts of them, then it gets depressive and creepy. That´s the opposite of what power metal is all about.
You don´t have to be a power metal freak to appreciate Dawning. Could be the best power-progressive cd of the ´00s, am i not correct Raiderblack..?

Dawning underwhelmed me, but I could see some potential in these musicians. Have they not released anything since then?
I think the best power-progressive CD of the 90's would have to be something by Blind Guardian, or Angel Dust (or Symphony X's V, if we can call them power).
Have you heard Kamelot's Fourth Legacy? I wouldn't call it creepy, and kind of like it (it's not as sickeningly sweet as the totality of Karma, and not as cheesy as Epica). I never got into The Black Halo, though it probably isn't a bad album.

I´ve got the reworked remastred re-realease (or something) that came just recently. It´s always hard to tell when you´ve only listened to it once (i could change my mind about it), but for me it sounded fresh. Extremely well played, almost progressive, and still with great melodies. Vocals are good and VARIED which is essential. Like Dream Theater-Dominici mostly but at times like the guy from Zero Hour.
And don´t you think it´s wise to expect some lyrics about chasing the dragon´s tail. When i buy a Slayer cd i expect sensitive lyrics about smashing faces to the fucking ground and stuff. It´s just part of the bargain that i agree upon when i purchase their product.
And the rockier stuff that they (Archetype) incorporate works very well and makes tham stand out from the rest. I can say the same thing about Slayer too by the way, South of Heaven is high on my purchase-list.
Heard a couple of songs that a friend played but Forever was the only one that stuck to my mind. I made a request to hear it twice. From which cd is it?

"Forever" is from Karma, Kamelot's most polished album--a bit too slick and sugary with its sweet melodies, but very enjoyable nonetheless. There is a very good instrumental introduction leading into "Forever" (which is track 2). The song that I remember the most from it is track 4, "The Spell," with very nice riffs and lyrics about nostalgia for the medieval times, when people knew less about the world and had a refreshingly "relative perception of reality." Speaking of lyrics about bashing people's faces in, I sort of prefer them when they occur unexpectedly. For instance, the gothic doom metal band The Provenance (who sound like a less progressive Madder Mortem or like a sweeter "My Dying Bride" with a female singer) has an album called How Would You Like to Be Spat at in the Face, most of whose lyrics are very rude but set to music that could almost sound comforting. For instance, in their song "Kick You So Hard" there is an acoustic interlude in which the singer sings in an angelic voice: You should know I will retaliate, stomp your bloody face into the ground, kick you so hard, kick you so hard... It's a transcendent experience. ;D I don't really recommend their albums, which are a bit boring, but do listen to that song on their MySpace page: www.myspace.com/theprovenancesweden

I've become more and more a non-fan of power metal over the years. A lot of times I appreciate the music, obviously some bands are extremely talented. But sugary sweet is a good way to describe the sometimes overly 'fun' sound, I definitely prefer a more dark and aggressive sound with fast metal. There is a difference though with anything in the prog realm even though they can cross lines sometimes, when bands drop into a more rock/metal style like say Riverside(and FW of course)...they're mellow ballady type songs still have a very dark, dreary feel to them. I've said for awhile now that Kamelot is an exception to the rule for me, I only have "Epica" and "The Black Halo" from them though. So I can't comment on their complete catalogue, but I do like both of those albums with "Epica" being quite excellent IMO. Khan is ultra-clean for sure, which can be a downside to many power metal singers for me...but there's something about his style that allows me to like him and enjoy even the very sweet ballady stuff. Then there's the sometimes fine line between power metal and viking/folk metal, I'm no expert on the viking/folk style...but intend to be soon enough as it's the main genre I'd like to concentrate on for awhile. I find there's a pretty big difference even though they can be based in some fusion of black and power metal, but bands like Moonsorrow have damn near clinched the perfect blend of medieval melody(power metal-esque) with much more aggressive vocals and black elements to darken the whole mood. We need a thread for this genre too I suppose, even though I have a long list of bands of that style I'm going to check out...I can always add more to it.
