Brett... you like HEAVENLY? What's a conservative good ole boy like you doing listening to a fucking French band? Your taste continues to plummet.
Actually, Heavenly don't suck because they're French. They suck because they're terrible. I specifically remember being awestruck by the fact that Kai Hansen played more on their debut album than they did. And he hasn't done a damn bit of good since Sigh No More came out like fifteen years ago.

I haven't listened to Heavenly, but I do like Sonata Artica a lot. I just can't get into the "dungeons and dragons" lyrics that most power metal bands sing about. Has anyone heard of Orion Riders? They're pretty good, and don't sing about slaying dragons or casting spells! They're from Italy.

Sonata Arctica is great, but my favorite Power Metal band is quickly becoming Gamma Ray. I bought No World Order, and it just kicked my ass. "Dethrone Tyranny" and "The Heart of the Unicorn" continue to be my favorite speed/power metal songs to wake up to; I listen to both songs every morning! ;D

Oh dear lord. "The Heart of the Unicorn" may have been one of the most egregious abuses of musical bullshit in the history of mankind

Another great PM band has got to be Edguy. They're funny as hell, and though Rocket Ride was a clear deviation from their previous style (with the really Hard Rock feel and whatnot), it was extremely enjoyable nonetheless ;D YOU'VE GOT YOUR CHANCE GOIN' ON MY TRAIN YOU'RE JUMPIN' THE CATCH OF THE CENTURY YOU'VE GOT YOUR CHANCE BUT YOU'RE MUCH TOO VAIN TO TAKE IT THE CATCH OF THE CENTURY!!! ;D

just thinking. Would modern Judas Priest count as Power Metal. They're like a more serious version of Manowar.

Awesome then you're nothing like some of the French people I met in Cancun and Tahiti... I would never mean to label all French people that way... I've met some awesome Frenchies.... But some French People "Hate" Americans... I know this because of the way they treated my friends and I. They even called us Nasty Yankees etc.. hehe!! We found it rather humorous actually... Funny thing was that when we were in Tahiti, this cool french guy heard what they were saying to us and apologized for them.... Dude was rad... because we didn't deserve any of that... He tried to explain why they had those attitudes and that he didn't agree with them. I've been to a few Club Meds where cultures collide lol... Please do not take any offense, because I would never mean to throw a blanket on a whole country... Another great PM band has got to be Edguy. Meh, that's fine, I understood what you meant anyways And yes, I do understand how much the French seem to hate Americans. It's odd, really. Why would an entire country devote itself to hating Americans? I guarantee you that even though I'm 100% French, I would probably be hated upon my visit to France. I was born and raised in the U.S., but my grandparents on Mom's and Dad's side were raised in French Canada and France, respectively. My mom and dad aren't like that, either ;D

just thinking. Would modern Judas Priest count as Power Metal. They're like a more serious version of Manowar. Well, the thing is, the whole thing with Power Metal is melody. There's a certain thing you hear with bands like, say, Edguy and Stratovarius, that you do not hear with Judas Priest. Judas Priest is just straight-up Speed Metal for their latest album, and the same goes for Painkiller, too. And Manowar isn't Power Metal, but regular Heavy Metal

I think the problem with most power metal is that the musicians consider it acceptable to dish out cheesy lyrics and formulaic melodies that have been done to death by predecessors, because that's what countless other power metal bands are doing. When I try to listen to new efforts to bands like Firewind or Running Wild, it boggles my mind how utterly devoid they are of any original ideas, and consequently any genuine feeling (because it is impossible to be truly genuine about something that has been stolen from elsewhere).
This in spite of the fact that most of the time when a power metal band did make a difference they did so by going above and beyond the conventions. Helloween's Keeper albums were humorous and melodically innovative for their time, and the band continued to introduce new lyrical themes and atmospheric elements with Master of the Rings or The Dark Ride. Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica distinguished themselves by going for broke with emotional sincerity--something that bands like Dragonforce, Cellador or countless others do not seem to have no concept of. And then there are refreshingly angry albums like Iced Earth's Burnt Offerings and Angel Dust's Enlighten the Darkness, which are a hundred times more beautiful than most power metal, because you can immediately sense that the band really cared about getting their message across, and the emotions feel earned and truthful.
This may be too harsh a statement, but I really feel like most power metal bands do not even try to think for themselves, and use the genre conventions as an excuse for not engaging their imaginations when writing the songs but merely focusing on perfecting their technical craft (which by itself really doesn't mean anything). Power metal can be a great and expressive genre for musicians that have new ideas to bring to the table, but the vast majority of bands active today have either stopped doing that, stopped caring, or never did anything innovative in the first place. And when they do not, this can result in some of the most painful and aggravating listening experiences imaginable.
