That was my initial feeling for "The Dark Saga". But I had nothing to compare to and after a couple listens, I started to hear some intracacies...and started to like it more. I guess I was expecting something more progressive, so I'll look into those other albums also.
Still like the concept of "The Glorious Burden", and would like to hear R. Christy on the drums eventually.

I can't get into the new Iced Earth. I miss Barlow. And Death Angel is Thrash LOL
The Art Of Dying is true to their roots as a Bay Area Thrash Giant. The comeback album of the year!

I like the new Iced Earth. Barlow was getting too droney for me, and he seemed to be getting worse each album. For me my favorite album with Barlow is Burnt Offerings. Other than that he only did good with their more mellow or passionate songs.
I think Ripper fits them better.

Ripper Blows hehe!
I saw both band iterations live and the latest was weaker to me.
I just like Barlow's DRONE better. Ripper sounds too eighties to me or something. Just a preference thing I guess.

Ripper sounds too eighties to me or something. Every time I've seen you you've worn a Metal Church shirt. Don't tell me that ain't 80s. Power metal... I can't listen to it anymore. It's gotta be unbleivably incredibly inhumanly wow for me to give it any more than a casual listen. I still love Helloween, Strato, Labyrinth and Nightwish, but I can't find ANY new power metal bands that move me at all. Edguy's fun, but that's it. Brainstorm and Symphorce are great for driving, but that's it. Sonata Arctica probably kick ass live, but their covers are FAR better than their own material. And I cannot stomach Dragonforce. That band is SO fucking GOOD, but their music is SO fucking WEAK. It's unbearable. It's like the sonic equivalent to a smiley-face, that banal mark of blissful ignorance. Yuck. Ripper vs. Barlow? Can't compare them. Ripper has a better technique, but Barlow's got a better identity. I like them both.

I just started listening to Control Denied, "The Fragile Art of Existence". So who is this Tim Aymar guy on vocals? Haven't really looked much, but can't find any info on him. He seems to sound a lot like Barlow, but better IMO. Granted I'm not familiar with all of Barlow's work, but Aymar kicks ass in every direction.
Of course the music covers a bit of everything, power, prog, thrash. I know most of the members are from Death...love Christies work on the drums, very unique. But I understand that he and the rest play better on the last Death album which I will attempt at some point. Not a big death metal fan, but learning to like some of the more melodic stuff.

Tim Aymar sings for a band called Psycho Scream (stupid name, I know) with Matt Johnsen, he of Feast or Famine and Metal Maniacs. I don't know if they're still together, but I think Aymar sings for Pharoah too. I don't know what else he's done, but i suppose you could check with Jim at www.lotfp.com - he knows his shit very well, and I recall reading a lengthy interview with Tim in that rag when Fragile Art came out. The playing is tighter on Sound of Perseverance but I think the Control Denied album is more timeless, and certainly not bad for a first jab at clean vocals. I had the honor of meeting Chuck the year before he died at a Watchtower show in Austin, and he was a cool guy. My Control Denied CD bears his signature simply because I happened to have it with me. Christy flipped out when I showed it to him on the last Iced Earth tour - he videotaped me talking about it.

Thanks for the info...Christy is probably a blast ha? I mean he seems kinda quite and modest on Stern, but he's goofy as all hell... Seth

Great power metal for me.. came/comes mainly from u.s.a. Bands like Helstar, Liege Lord, Lethal, early Fates Warning, early Queensryche, Heir Apparent, Metal Church, Crimson Glory, Destiny's End, Sanctuary etc. Most european GOOD power metal was produced in the 80s .. first 3 Helloween albums (and their ep), Heaven's Gate, Scanner, Running Wild etc. Early Stratovarius are quite good too. Now the "genre" turned to describe utterly gay crap like Edgay, Rhapsody, Dragonforce etc. Sonata Arctica are the only decent european power metal band today, and the BEST one is Shadowkeep (who play u.s.a. power metal, although they are english)

One thing Edguy have going for them is that they are fun. Sonata Arctica? Boring. Great covers, though. Funny you mention Shadow Keep. I jammed with their singer (he's from San Antonio, where I live) several years ago when I was trying to put a band together. Their music is okay, but that chick (Jennifer?) is a great guitarist. Check out a Houston band called Azrael's Bane. Some of their stuff is pretty cheesy, but there is an incredible amount of talent in this band. I expect great things from them.

I heard some Azrael Bane...and i noticed the cheesy factor you mentioned, maybe they listen to some 80s hair bands..they were enjoyanble for sure. I havent heard Shadowkeep with their new singer..if thats who you mean, if you were talking about the one who sings in the albums (Rogue..something) the guy is the greatest inheritor of the legacy Geoff Tate, Ray Alder and Midnight gave to the genre.

Is Sonata Arctica a great Power Metal Band or what. Some people don't think so , but I think they are near perfect. Them and Dragonforce are my favorites in the genre at the moment. ;D I think that they are not great! I could say... they suck! Sorry, for this but, it's my view...
