I just listened to this band for the FIRST TIME last week ( I know I can already hear the shrieks and screams from the board) and these guys are awesome. I was encouraged by someone to take a listen and I cannot believe what I am hearing. I'm listening to Still Life and so far the tracks on repeat are The Ivory Gate of Dreams and Eleventh Hour. Oh yeah and Pleasant Shade of Gray. These all hit the eardrum just right. I'm sure there's gonna be more. The studio cuts must be through the roof. Oh MAN... I still cannot believe it. Ray Alder is just AMAZING...f-in amazing...all right I'll say it, FUCKING AMAZING. MAN, that guy's voice is so pure, every note is perfect. MAN, I cannot believe they have been around this long and I'm only catching on now.

What's your musical background? Likes, dislikes? Are you just getting into metal in general? Just curious, there's lots to read about FW and many other bands in the different rooms of this forum.

Welcome Nancy! I remember exactly what you are experiencing... Be warned, though. It doesn't go away. Be sure to check out Redemption, Engine, OSI, Slaviour, Agent Steel and some more I can't think of off the top of my head. There is a plethora of amazing talent inspired by Fates and we all love discussing it, so please feel free to pick some brains. Most of us don't bite, unless we're asked to of course.

Let me just say I was driving today and I was listening to The Ivory Gate of Dreams. AGAIN I was so wrapped up in the fascination of that piece that I drove right past my destination. I should have been pissed off that I passed it, but I was glad to have the extra time to drive while the song was still playing. Is it just me, but I cannot shut a song off until it is over. I always feel like it is a disrespect to the artist. That's me though. The other day I was driving back from the supermarket (which is only 10 minutes away from me) and of course I had Ivory Gates playing and when I got home I just could not shut it off until it was over. I pulled into the driveway and sat there with the car running, for 10 minutes. Colleen you are so right...IT'S NOT GOING AWAY.

Ben thanks for the welcome and Seth, to answer your questions, here goes.
In grade school joined the school band as a clarinet player for 4 years. Then years later took an interest in guitar/drums. I just started drumming again. I took lessons 5 years ago for about 5 months. My drum instructor asked me if there were any drums "songs" I'd like to learn so I told him, yeah how about Subdivisions by Rush. Never got to it though. I also play guitar, though still in the early learning phases of it all. But I am looking to go the whole nine yards with theory, improv, composition, classical styles, etc.. In the last 5 years I've been doing a lot of lyrical writings, or "poems" if you want to call them that. Basically I have devoted my life to music, and it is a committment I made to myself in 2000. I think I more of a fan of music than anything else. I just love music. I love hearing what people can do with what they want to express. It never gets old.
As far as getting into metal...let me backtrack. I was 12 when Appetite for Destruction came out. I was really into Guns N Roses then. So my brother got me the album and I started to listen to a classic rock station that played them and of course I was "introduced" to all that music. Then I got into Metallica with the Black Album in '91. Then Queensryche came out with Empire and I really got into them. Then the whole Seattle scene came out and I really got into Alice N Chains, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Then I remember listening to one of the classic rock stations and I heard Rush. HELLO. Subdivisions really hit home for me especially at the time I heard it in '92, being in high school and not fitting in or in my case, fitting in with the outcasts, really hit a note with me. I guess back then (early 90's) I was getting into any classic/hard rock that was basically on MTV and the radio. I did not know about any underground bands happening or the progressive metal scene although Rush and Queensryche were on the scene but I did not know it was labeled as progressive. So I only heard of the radio friendly bands. But then my listening spectrum was broadened with Dream Theater, when I heard Pull Me Under and that whole album, which I was so taken with. But the metal scene I've only gotten into recently in the last 3 years. In 2003 I first heard Iron Maiden and that was my introduction of metal other than Metallica. Then of course I got into Priest and Dio. And now Fates, forget about it.
As far as my dislikes....rap metal like Kid Rock, Limp Biskit, etc...I love vocals, and when the rap mixes with the metal, it just doesn't hit me right. You know, metal is so empowering and fierce that when it is being "rapped" over it just seems like some kind of injustice is at play. To me it doesn't seem to equal out to the power in the music. Take for example Arch Enemy...not digging that style of the vocals at all, but the music is so awesome. Like the song We Will Rise, musically and lyrically that song is so awesome but, those vocals totally ruin it for me.
Here's a short list of bands I like: Iron Maiden DIO Priest LIVE Rush Dream Theater Queensryche Audioslave Soundgarden Alice N Chains Godsmack, which by the way did an awesome song "Serenity" about Neil Peart's Ghostrider book. (Early) Metallica Flotsam N Jetsam Steve Vai Tony MacAlpine Joe Satriani Eric Johnson Jeff Beck Vinnie Moore Dixie Dregs Steve Morse BLue Oyster Cult Yes Lynch Mob Dokken Allman Bros ZZ Top Kansas Rainbow Frank Zappa That's only a few. Oh yeah and I support independent artists too. Gotta keep the music alive. Support. Support.

Ditto Ben! Are you on myspace, by any chance? Great tool for finding new bands that I think you would appreciate... if so, let me/us know so we can you and then barrage you. lol And try to make ProgPower next year, if at all possible.

Yeah I will definitley be buying all of Fates CD's. ALL OF THEM. Been checking out Engine too, MAN that stuffs heavy. I'll have to hit the store soon to see if they have those 2 CDS...Superholic and the other one...if they are even in the stores anymore. Like it thus far. Does Fates tour the US AT ALL? I would love to see them live. Colleen I don't have a myspace account, I'm really trying to avoid that whole scene although I came across a few great bands/soloists on there. So yeah that was going to be my next question...what other bands are you all into? I'm definitley hungry for some unheard/underground music. Doesn't have to be progressive either. But I'll take whatever I can. Prog Power hey? Been reading a lot about this event lately. We shall see.

Hey hey, welcome! It seems like your taste in music is pretty similar to a lot of what people here listen to. As for me, here's a list of bands I like:
Iron Maiden (classic!) Redemption (Fates' singer) Orphaned Land (proggy melodic death metal from Israel) Aletheian (technical death metal) Pantommind (prog metal from Bulgaria) Shadow Gallery (prog metal/rock) Cynic (technical jazzy death metal) Unexpect (crazy!) Morgion (doom/death metal) Winds (neoclassical prog metal) Age of Silence (other project from the Winds guy) Angra (power/prog from Brazil) Shaaman (ex-Angra members, their stuff kills Angra's new stuff) Borknagar (post black metal) Woods of Ypres (black/doom metal) Garden of Shadows (melodic death metal)
Well, those are some of my favorites. Check 'em out! Good stuff. -Kerrick

Yeash, Kerrick's list is pretty decent, save for Shaman, who have thankfully disbanded.
