U.S. Army Digs Up Weapons Cache in Iraq By RYAN LENZ, Associated Press Writer ZUWAD KHALAF, Iraq -
U.S. soldiers in the northern Iraqi desert dug up more than 1,000 aging rockets and missiles wrapped in plastic, some of which were buried as recently as two weeks ago, Army officials said Tuesday.
Commanders in the 101st Airborne Division said an Iraqi tipped them off to the buried weapons, perhaps an indication that residents in this largely Sunni Arab region about 150 miles north of Baghdad are beginning to warm up to coalition forces.
"The tide is turning," said 2nd Lt. Patrick Vardaro, 23, of Norwood, Mass., a platoon leader in the division's 187th Infantry Regiment. "It's better to work with Americans than against us."
As the sun set, soldiers from the 101st continued to uncover more, following zigzagging tire tracks across the desert floor and using metal detectors to locate weapons including mines, mortars and machine gun rounds.
"This is the mother load, right here," Sgt. Jeremy Galusha, 25, of Dallas, Ore., said, leaning on a shovel after finding more than 20 Soviet missiles.
The weapons are of primary concern for soldiers in Iraq, where bombs made with loose ordinance by insurgents are the preferred method to target coalition forces.
"In our eyes, every one of these rockets represents one less" bomb, Vardaro said.
Vardaro would not comment on whether there were signs the caches had been used recently to make bombs. But service records accompanying the missiles dated to 1984, suggesting they were buried by the Iraqi military under Saddam Hussein.
Still, the plastic around some of the rockets — of Soviet, German and French origins — appeared to be fresh and had not deteriorated as it had on some of the older munitions.
A U.S. Air Force explosive ordinance team planned to begin destroying them as early as Wednesday morning.

Dude! How'd I miss this story? Well, that's encouraging to know that a lot of ordnance has been dealt with. It's also encouraging to see evidence that might have the potential to embarrass the French, German and Russian backstabbers governments.

The quicker the better, get our troops out of that bloodbath of a country! The mission will hardly be accomplished IMO, but as long as the gov't is satisfied that they can handle it themselves...send our people home.

Not so fast there homeboy... hehe Our withdrawal cannot be seen as withdrawal. Like Dicky Rummy said it would be the same as leaving Germany to the Nazi's after WWII. We need to see this through... have a little more patience. Do you think losing this war is a good idea? you seem to... I think it's a terrible idea. Pulling out now will be losing, and we will leave Iraq to what? Let them finish the job... An excellent article out of the UK. www.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,,1735628,00.html

I don't think that losing any war is a good idea. I don't want to see us lose this war, but IMO Iraq is never going to be a peaceful Democratic country.
We can leave there for good in '08 as we're now hearing(nice of Bush to say point blank that it's gonna be the next President's problem), or we can stay there for the next 20 years and the bloodshed will continue. Saying Iraq will have peace is like saying the road map to peace with Israel and Palestine will work.
My reasoning remains that humankind is not heading toward a more peaceful way of living with each other, it's moving toward a more technological dominance of each other...money, land and power talk, bullshit walks and/or gets blown up.
Having said all that, I still maintain that leaving while all hell's breaking loose will not be good or look good. What are we gonna do? You can only ask Americans to be so patient with something like this, 4 years is nothing really... but in a war that still seems unnecessary to many...it's a lifetime.
Seth
Edit: The article is good and makes some good points, the battle of left and right may likely get blurred even in the near future. I think it will for sure if we try to look to good to the rest of the world...very fine line there.

I think that Europe is more to blame than anyone. Listen to these people! news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4805322.stmThey wanted it, they needed it. If the west had any unity, if they had less self interest, if they would have listened to the will of the Iraqi populace, if there was less self centered Feel Good Anti-Americanism, if they would have pitched in to help liberate these poor people then this thing would have been a rout. Good Guys Win. But no they abandoned us and the Iraqi People. And Europe (and many Americans) are still sitting around hoping we lose. They are also sitting around hoping the Iraqi people lose... Sad....

Well, it is sad that anyone would want failure for them or for our commitment to it either. The one point that still sticks in my mind though is that with a bit more patience(that thing that we're being asked to have now), we may have had a bigger, better coalition. I know the arguments against waiting, but with the whole world on our side after allowing Saddam and his regime to prove just how much they needed to go...the bigger coalition would have knocked it out of the park as you said, and we wouldn't be the scapegoats that we've become. Of course, right/wrong...good timing/bad timing, we'll always be the bad guys as long as we're the main world power.... Seth

We waited for over a decade... If it wasn't for Europe we would have rolled through there in the 1st war for sure. And he really deserved it then. I still say that was the lost oportunity. Then we just left the Iraqi's hanging, and it took years to put out all those well fires etc. No wonder the Iraqi's cynics.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - An Iraqi tennis coach and two of his players were shot to death this week in Baghdad because they were wearing shorts, authorities said Saturday, reporting the latest in a series of recent attacks attributed to Islamic extremists.
Never forget what were doing over there and who we are fighting.... It's a good cause...
