I have no regard for the pope, but as popes go he was probably one of the better ones. opposing feminism (depending on how you equate it) can be a good thing. (not oppression women feminism=good, women better than men feminism=bad) opposing abortion good. Opposing abortion and birth conrtol=stupid. (and really just the latter is stupid, but pairing with abortion is mind numbingly dumb - excepting that abortion is a form of birth control) Now onto interesting fun stuff: the prophecies of St. Malachy only 2 popes left! Is the end nigh? www.new-pope.com/newpope-us/propheties.htm

You may find this interesting, from www.atheists.orgPapal Death Watch Coverage Out of Control,Over the Top - Charges Atheist Group
An Atheist organization charged today that coverage of the Papal death watch for Pope John Paul II was out of control, and rapidly crossing the line from objective reporting to uncritical adulation and propaganda.
Ellen Johnson, president of American Atheists, noted that the intense media focus made it appear that nothing else news worthy or of political importance was happening anywhere in the United States or the rest of the world.
Johnson added that the uncritical adulation for John Paul II ignored the fact that he condemned millions of people for their sexual orientation; continued the church's policy of relegating women to second-class status; and failed to respect the American constitutional guarantee of separation of church and state by pressuring lawmakers and trying to influence our nation's political process.
Most Americans are not Roman Catholic, nor are most people on this planet, said Johnson. If a Muslim or Buddhist or Protestant leader dies, the media devotes nowhere near this level of attention, and politicians do not feel the need to make glowing public statements.
The situation, said Johnson, is out of control and over the top.
So much for "fair and balanced" when it comes to the Vatican's political power and media influence, she added.
David Silverman, Communications Director for American Atheists, said that print and internet media seemed less focused on the news being streamed from Vatican City.
There are plenty of other events taking place that we need to pay attention to such as the surge in oil prices, a virus outbreak in Africa which threatens to claim hundreds of thousands of lives, and the war on terror.

Ellen Johnson sounds like a big baby. Acusing the Pope of following his religion. Wahhhhhhhhhhhh! I'm tired of Pope - a Vison myself but I don't take it personally. It is always a big story when a Pope dies and a new one is instated. Tell Ellen to get over herself.

My point exactly on the first paragraph, Gods work should have nothing to do with any gov't and their dealings. The second point is a good one, it is curious why such hype? One guess I have is the deep history of Rome, the Vatican, and their influence over the centuries(again misplaced IMO). Not to mention their immediate influence over many world gov'ts because of their wealth. It's attractive to put that whole beautiful display on TV for the world to see and serves the purposes of many I suppose. Seth

Progrocker you're too funny.
First you post an article in the other thread about how its wrong for people to get offended over anti-religious stuff, and then you post and article about someone who gets offended over coverage of the pope. Hilarious.
Double Standard? naw........
Like it or not, the pope is big news. I simply choose to turn it off.

Hilarious. I dont think anybody is "offended", we're more like "outraged" by the inappropriately disproportionate amount of coverage of this mediocre person. Besides, I'm not suing anybody, and not calling for any legislative action, so it's not a double standard. I think everyone has a right to be offended, but they have no right to use the government for revenge.

Hey Progrocker duder! Why does that outrage anybody? It is a bit annoying, because things like this overshadow other stories, and to me are extremely boring, but it seems silly to me that anyone would outraged that the news services (ALL of them, but in the aricle she references Fair and Balanced, an obvious crack at Fox, which I don't get, they are no different in their coverage) are covering the death of a huge religious and political figure like the Pope. It is a big story after all. The coverage is excessive, but a lot of stories get excessive coverage. It's just the way it is, and probably has more to do with ratings than anything else.
But it will all be over soon and we'll go on to whatever gets the ratings next.

I could see how some would be outraged, but that's one of those things to me that fall under the category of who cares. It is annoying when it goes on for days, but the Schiavo thing did also...even longer.
My only problem has been the rhetoric from the clergy and the hype about the authenticity of his position.

Does this come from bitterness or jealousy? Why can't people just let others respect the Pope. IT"S ALL SO STUPID TO ME. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avignon_papacyFrance has LONG had difficulties accepting Rome as center of the CC
