Man these guys have become a major favorite of mine, I know the new album is out...will be getting it soon enough. For now I'm still working on the back catalog, been a fan for some time...but liking them more now that I've got pretty much everything with Vince on vocals. Not sure if I'll spend time or money on the early stuff.
I have to say after plenty of spins, "Eternity" still doesn't blow me away...would be the only one I consider sub-par in comparison to the albums that follow. Seems like being the transition album, the writing wasn't quite there yet...like they weren't exactly sure how they wanted to sound. And of course many people say that Vince could barely hold a note on that album, and I agree. Though that wouldn't hurt it too much for me if all the other aspects were there.
I did go a bit backwards in aquiring their albums, having just got "Judgement" a few weeks ago. Why did I wait so long?... #doh# What an amazing album, and within 1 album Vince became an excellent vocalist...nailing every note and every song. The writing was there, they knew how they wanted to sound and created the perfect depressive, melancholy, moody spirit.
"Alternative 4" was actually the 2nd album I heard from them after "A Natural Disaster". I think it still remains my favorite though "Judgement" has now inched up there. It's a perfect album IMO from beginning to end, I sometimes refer to it as the 'soundtrack to your suicide'. Not that that's a good thing, it's just that powerful that I think if someone was considering suicide seriously...might not be the album to change their mind...
"A Fine Day to Exit" and "A Natural Disaster" are both excellent also, though they may have evolved their sound somewhat...it's a good change that keeps them interesting. Overall, up to AND, I'm not sure the feeling they invoke is all that different though. I have heard a couple samples of the new one and have read a few reviews complaining about it being too 'upbeat', that could have an affect on how I receive it. But they've done nothing bad since "Judgement", even if they become more upbeat...I'm guessing they do it right.
As a side note, I love when Lee Douglas guest vocals...on the albums and the live DVDs. I have both "A Moment in Time" and "Were You There?" on DVD, exceptional concerts...with WYT? probably a bit better. Maybe because they seem a bit more animated and into the crowd on that one? Anyway, Lee has such a beautiful voice that fits their style perfectly...she compliments Vince so well. Love it when she sings "A Natural Disaster" live, the harmonies with Vince are great and she does so well at the end doing the chorus acapella.
Great band that I hope continues to excel.
