If it is Im just very happy to see these guy live one time in my life:-) BTW do you know the setlist played? I echo that... I finally got to see them in Houston the night before and it was an amazing show. They played the same setlist in Houston that they played in Connecticut, minus Quietus :/ I'm assuming the set for SA was similar, with or without Quietus.

alright here is how i remember it: paralells in its entirety monument one nothing left to say (which was very cool) APSOG Part 3 another perfect day pale fire (also very cool as my band plays this - frank NAILED the chorus vocals!!!!) face the fear through different eyes i believe that is it.. i didnt get into fates until the mid 90's.. paralells was the first thing i heard, followed by Inside Out and at the time that type of music (melodic prog) was really something I was beginning to get into. hearing FW at that time in my life really opened things up for me both spritually, personally, and as a musician. i am one of those odd folks who feels way too much about things that most people probably could take with a grain of salt. never in my wildest dreams did i imagine i would be able to see the original lineup - much less see the original lineup play the parallels album in its entirety. I texted my girlfriend who also attended today and told her that waves of melancholy over what I we had gotten to see were washing over me as I sat at my desk at work remembering the experience. Yea, I'm a freak. so for me, the experience was beyond cool - it was unbelievable. the band was awesome though joe looked like he was going to pass out from the heat maybe .. all of the people in san antonio were awesome as well. i also noticed today that Life in Still Water from the show got posted on You Tube.. Interestingly enough I am the bald guy seen just in front of the camera in several shots. lol. Anyways... I hope the band keeps going and hopefully we can even see something from this lineup again, though I won't hold my breath for that. Thanks for hosting and running this board and for letting me share my experience. In closing I will say that I've seen the APSOG lineup many times and had some fun experiences - but to see frank and joe - especially FRANK just SLAY the guitar, well - I'm not sure that anything - even seeing QR/DT/FW together would even be as cool as what I saw this past weekend. edited - here are some pics i grabbed from my crappy iphone - with the first few pics being from the opening bands enjoy: cid-2ae6fe1883410d59.photos.live.com/browse.aspx/faesMark

Never in your life did you imagine seeing the orignal lineup . . and YOU DIDN'T!!!
You saw A classic lineup, but it was FW mark 4 to use the Deep Purple designation for lineup changes.

you are absolutely correct - but since the context of my post revolved around PARALLELS I guess I assumed that it was taken for granted that the parallels lineup was what I was discussing.
the use of "original line up" probably wasn't wise regardless.
i stand corrected.

It was an awesome show, of course. Ray did hint during it that they would come back after a new album! The setlist for SA was the Parallels album followed by Pale Fire, Face the Fear, One, Through Different Eyes, Monument. Encore was APSOG Part 3, Another Perfect Day, and Nothing Left to Say. I think that was the order, but not entirely sure. Whoever was camera phoning the show probably knows the exact order. They didn't play Quietus though; I was really hoping they'd play that last. It was a great crowd. Ray kept thanking us, but I'm sure I speak for most that we were thanking Fates Warning!

i was the sweaty bald guy with the brunette.. jaw agape, eyes wide, singing every word. definitely worth the drive down from dallas... we even attempted to go to the riverwalk on saturday but it kind of sucked due to the heat/humidity/stillness.. so we walked a short while, found a "neo-texmex" restaraunt and ate, and bailed that scene. i found it interesting how much of a scene there is in SA still... dallas absolutely sucks for metal right now. the guys i jam with arent even interested in doing anything due to the terrible scene here. san antonio on the other hand seems alive and well. that venue reminded me quite a bit of the old Dallas City Limits.. ahh memories.

That's funny, were Jim and Frank both using Marshall heads for the San Antonio show? Looks like it from the photos... They each had Mesas in Houston.

yea, definitely marshalls both cabinet and head wise - at least thats what the enclosures were. who knows what was stuffed into them though. i find it kind of funny that twin guitarists in a band with such a "balls and chunk" sound could switch between the two, but like i said, who knows what mods, etc the marshalls might have.
i was very curious to see what type of switching system/pedals/pedalboard/whatever Frank was using but unfortunately was never that close to the stage. I would guess from listening that it was fairly simplistic - maybe a tube screamer, chorus, and delay pedal?...
Matheos does all of the writing for the most part, but Saturday night very much turned me into a Frank fan lead wise. I've seen Jim play most of those songs on his own, so I know he can certainly handle all of it - but Frank just seemed incredibly unique in his playing style and I loved it. I had always thought in listening to PS, P, and IO that Frank was playing the crazy parts, and now it is confirmed!
I feel sort of shameful as I've known about this board for quite some time but never posted until now. It's sad to see how old some of the messages are here, but I guess the board probably picks up when its release time or tour time - neither of which Fates has done a whole lot of lately.
Finally, I was nosing around on some forums today and stumbled across a line where it quoted Ray as saying in August of 2009 that they were in the middle of a new record.
I wonder if that was just the remastering of Parallels or if they've actually got something in the can and are just waiting to release it?

Maybe something happened to their gear between the two shows and they used house equipment at the SA show? I don't know, seems weird since the Marshall cabs are the same as the ones they had in Houston... Only then Jim had a Dual Rectifier and Frank a Triple. I think Jim just used his standard amp footswitch, but Frank had a Line 6 floorboard of some sort. I don't know if it was just for FX or if he was switching amp channels with it, too. I wasn't able to see anything else he may have had on the ground, just the Line 6 board being put into place before they took the stage.
Frank's a really unique guitarist, so I was happy to finally see him live as well. He hit perhaps a single sour note the whole night... Tight playing from the whole band.
I see poor Joe was stuck with the cheap Schecter Damien bass for the SA show too :/ It was kinda sad... It went out of tune halfway through every song at the Houston show, so he was always scrambling to get to his tuner before the next song. He played great, though.

That implies new music, not just a Parallels remaster. I'm eagerly awaiting a new release. And yeah, Aresti stole the show in Connecticut as well, even though the rest of the band was in absolute top form, too. Amazing shred after amazing shred, it was incredible. If only I had caught his pick at the end! Unfortunately, it landed a few people to my right (if any of you were there, I was the guy with the backpack in the front row).

line6 huh? thats pretty cool...
i agree very interesting about the gear switch... when you look at that "practice pic" elsewhere here it looks like they were using mesa cabs as well as amps in that pic - at least Jim was..
Now that you guys mention using house equipment I wonder if they didnt travel with backline at all amp wise? again i think that would be crazy, but it shouldnt be that hard to get two heads and cabs up to SA from houston... I'm sure I'm wrong but..
And Joe... Yes, I thought it was a pretty crappy bass he was playing but never heard his tuning falter at all. I noticed a band screwup though I couldn't really tell who the instigator was, it was during the APSOG song they did, someone missed a tempo change it seemed. I did notice Frank looking over at Jim for most of the song after it happened, so maybe he was at fault.. After the face melting he provided during the show though he had nothing at all not to bask in the spotlight over.
Fingers crossed for new fates material!!

Frank Aresti is absolutely amazing, and has been every time I've seen him.
If you want to see Frank in "off the charts" mode, see if you can find the Houston show from 1990 on the Perfect Symmetry tour, or the 1992 show at the Limelight in New York City for the Parallels tour. Not only does he have extraordinary talent, but he makes it look so effortless while doing it.
Nice posts, everyone :-)
