OK, so after the Epica album I just reviewed got me back into the goth style while I've been hooked mainly on folk/viking...I'll bring up this killer folk metal masterpiece. For any fans of Ensiferum, Wintersun, Moonsorrow, Finntroll, or Korpiklanni...this album is a mix of all those styles and a little something more to make it absolutely stellar. This is a really heavy spin on the folk style, at least from an aggressive, speedy standpoint. It just shreds for the most part, with some slower songs or parts of songs here and there of course. But they've done a great job of blending the folk melody thing with a very fast and heavy style, incredible guitar work...along with perfectly placed keys and crushing drums. And the vocals, awesome...mostly higher pitched growls, but a lot of mixing in more mid range and great deep growls. It's hard to even describe how heavy this album is, so aggressive compared to many folk/viking styles. Far as a standout song, there's a ton...it's great beginning to end IMO. But "Unbesiegt"(track 4) is probably my favorite and the most interesting song as it actually has a bit of a jungle sound to it. Like something from a kid's jungle movie maybe, with the drums and other instruments giving it that vibe...you hear it in the beginning before it kicks your ass. Then it comes back with a little spot toward the end, the drums are so cool...really unique sound. Great album, highly recommended.... #rockin# #git#

Killer band with MUCH potential. Also check their debut album Turis Fartyr OK, finally bought this on itunes...came with the full demo album(which is mostly songs that were re-recorded on TF anyway). Have only one full spin in, sounds great though. Was a bit worried it may be too much like "Sagas"(or vice versa really), you know what I mean. But so far it seems that it stands alone, not really any different in style...but the songs aren't redundant. Crazy talented band either way. I see they have a new singer now on the new album that's due out(or out already?), was bummed to read that. But then listened to some samples and he sounds very good, as does the music.

The new album was streaming at the band's Myspace page, and it sounds pretty good. The new singer is much more brutal death metal a la the NY "sion" bands (Immo, Incant, Suffoc).

I'm just glad he can vary styles and tones, high, low, and mid range rather than monotone. In other words, he's enough like the original singer to keep it interesting. Man, that guy was killer IMO. Will work on TF for awhile and then get this one. ;D
