Was thinking for awhile I may have hit a wall on the goth metal style, not that I wasn't liking it anymore...but was veering more toward folk metal of all kinds. Wasn't going back to the goth as much or looking to buy more as I was hooked on folk and viking.
Well, I decided I should try Epica's newest(actually I see it won't be the newest in Oct.) since I do like the previous albums from them that I have...while "Consign to Oblivion" 's title track is one of the best songs of the entire genre I've heard yet.
I had read some good reviews of this one, some saying that Mark Jansen growled more and it seemed a bit heavier overall then previous works. I would say that's accurate, and I had been wishing all along on the other albums that he would write some heavier stuff and use his excellent growls more. Well, he did on this album for sure...and not that it's necessary really, the music is good either way. But I really like the heavier side of the band, and think Jansen's growls are perfect with the mix of deep and higher pitch.
So this album really delivers in that area for me, excellent use of symphony and choirs along with nice heavy guitar work mixed in with the mellower stuff featuring Simone(next to my wife and Colleen, the prettiest redhead on the planet... ). As far as Simone's vocals, I think she really stepped it up on this album. I've always liked her, but somehow she's managed to vary her vocal style more and really shines on this album.
Will also mention the drums seeming to stand out more, really powerful and up front(but not overpowering)...and some great fills throughout.
And lastly, as far as a standout song..."Fools of Damnation" may have taken over that spot on my list of 'best goth song I've heard' from "Consign to Oblivion". This song is stellar to say the least, amazing mix of Simone's best vocals, Jansen's excellent growls with some great heavy symphony backing crushing guitar work.
Recommended to anyone who likes the goth/beauty and the beast style metal, and to anyone curious about it...this would be a good band to start with.
