I was into metal back in the day (mid 80's). I started with Black Sabbath when I was young. Alice Cooper, TREX, ect. Metallica, Megadeth, Savatage. Never cared for Celtic Frost and the like...
My taste was pretty wide though... I also liked the Beatles, Rush, some folk (Joni Mitchell, ect.). I gave up listening to Metal for quite a few years (just about the time the Metallica (black album) came out, although I have it. I purchased a Metal Blade compilation tape on a road trip with my parents back then, and Fates was on there. I did not care for the rest, but I bought Awaken the Guardian because of (I think it was) "Valley of the Dolls". Megadeth and Fates (each on one side of the cassette) ruled my car stereo for a whole summer.
A couple of months ago I got into a nostalgic mood and yanked out all my metal on vinyl. I gotta say, a lot of it is crap (there were a real glut of 'speed metal' albums released and sold cheap).
When I put 'Awaken the Guardian' I was surprised how good it was compared to the rest! Fates should really be enjoying the seat Metallica is enjoying right now. You just do not tire of these songs! Too bad I got Perfect Symmetry on cassette (it's hatched).

I agree. Fates Warning's music holds up well over the years. Mine get played over and over, can't get enough of them.

Ah, I might be biased, but I don't think any of the Arch-era stuff has stood the test of time, as a matter of fact, it sounded dated to my ears in 1992! The production, songwriting, vocal style, all smack of an under-developed band circa, late 80's. Now I think INSIDE OUT and PARALLELS have aged far better, but again, I'm being a little biased here... ;-)
