Just thought I'd get in the first thread here ;D
But it does rule... probably about the only time I've been able to listen to Portnoy w/o getting irritated hehe.

I may be in the minority here, but I just can't get into it. I'm very open-minded and I like moody ambient stuff usually, but for some reason after quite a few listens...it just isn't calling me back for more.... Seth

Seth I personally don't own it, but have read reviews that said something along the line of how could so much talent put out something so bad?

It's just real slow and plods along. It's really a matter of taste, I wouldn't say it's bad at all...just never could get into it.
Since we know they're working on another one, I for one hope it's a little more upbeat and heavier. Knowing how well they can jam...we'll see.

OSI is one of the those cds that takes multiple spins to digest. It's nothing like Fates Warning. I don't really hear much in the way of a Chroma Key influence either (with the obvious exception to Moore's vocals). The influences I do hear are: prog, metal, experimental, industrial, and pyschedelic. I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity. It's safe to say that most in the prog world expected Matheos and Moore to solo (for the record, Matheos does solo....on one song ['Dirt From A Holy Place']). Both Moore and Matheos write for the songs (the songs aren't built around chops [like a few bands out there...wink, wink]). If you've listened to OSI several times and don't like them, that's cool. If you haven't heard them, I recommend checking them out. Download one of these tracks: OSI, Dirt From A Holy Place, or When You're Ready (my personal favorite). Honestly, there isn't a weak track on the cd. I can't wait for their second release!!
A side note: I'd love to hear Steven Wilson (shutDOWN) or Daniel Gildenlow participate on the second disc (Gildenlow is far too busy though....wishful thinking right?!).

OSI's album has some nice tunes, BUT I can't listen to it because the cd is a bit too topically dated. Listening to songs like Hello Helicopter or the title track feels like spreading leaches and rock salt inside a gashing bleeding wound.
If certain things last November had gone differently, I might be tempted to give the cd another spin.

Chinassiah, like your signature...was just imitating that to my wife the other day and she thought I was nuts... Nothing different from any other day...a different song or soundbite from Howard Stern and all she can do is shake her head.. Seth

With Maiden it's just that they have too much material to choose from (I half way considered the interlude section of 7th Son, but I didn't want my sig to be longer than my sometimes lengthy posts

Ummm, Chinassiah?
I hope you know where Maiden got those soundclips from???
Maybe one of my favorite ever BBC TV shows: "The Prisoner", with Patrick McGoohan (most recently known as the villain king in Mel Gibson's Braveheart)

I'll agree, that OSI is an acquired taste... My initial thoughts was hints of FW with some hints of Floyd, but overall I liked it. Again, probably the only time Portnoy did a decent job IMO (more specifically on the track "Memory Daydreams Lapses" where he sets up a nice groove).
Plus it's got Sean Malone (my all time fav bassist), though he's playing very mildly on the album, he again sets up some nice grooves every now and then. It's not for everyone, so I'd definitely recommend hearing samples first, though, the album is kinda diverse so even 2-3 songs wouldn't give you the whole picture.

<<BenMech>> I do realize that my Maiden got the sound clips from the UK show The Prisoner (I can't say I've ever seen it though living in the US). <<Richman Rush>> the album is kinda diverse so even 2-3 songs wouldn't give you the whole pictureI couldn't have said it any better An observation I've made is that OSI is a bit too diverse for some metal/prog metalers; yet it's too edgy or unusual for those who listen to more main stream music...

Damn shame you've never seen The Prisoner. No show has ever been like it, except for the parodies of it done on The Simpsons. (Remember the Homer is internet gossip Mr. X episode?)
