If FW doesn't want to play the old stuff, they should just change the band name.

P.S. Without the ARCH-ERA there would never have been a FATES WARNING. Someone should remind Jim of that then, and yourself, as JA is one of Ray's biggest inspirations. All I'm saying here, is as a long time fan, it's not much to ask, not much at all, to want to hear some of their earlier GREATS. That's what would make not only myself, but droves of other Fates fans to attend their shows again in the future. But word on their setlist ignoring a good majority of their fans on their next tour, I can guarantee I'll save my $. John is a neighbor of mine (in fact he visited a couple days ago and presented me the reissue of Awake the Guardian w/ the DVD video) and we have had extended talks about the early days of Fates. The original Fates Warning was a pioneering band in Progressive Metal but the early stuff was raw in comparison to whatever releases have come since as Jim has stated so much over the years. Awaken The Guardian has been rated up there w/ Master of Puppets and a few others as the most important and influential releases of the 1980s I bought No Exit not realizing at the time that John was no longer w/ the band and was a bit disappointed. Ivory Gate of Dreams redeemed it though and that is a song that I would like to have seen John do for sure. All following releases did nothing for me, I miss the intensity of the early releases. I will say that Ray is a good singer and had some big shoes to fill. He has done that job well It is this fans opinion that like Rush, the band progressed beyond their initial roots and in the process has not met the expectations of original Fates fans. Not playing the songs that brought them to the forefront of the PM genre is a mistake. John mentioned about how the band asked him to do a few dates in Germany (I believe) and the German fans were ecstatic and were hoping for a reunion which never happened John released a 2 song CD called a Twist of Fate (1995) which Jim and Mike played on I would highly recommend if you have not heard it. Almost sounds like Fates of old and Jim's guitar sounds GREAT!!! John also loved the sound and said that he wanted the mix to bring out Jim's guitar There is a very remote chance that John may collaborate a song w/ a southern progressive metal band (I will not name the band at this time as it is up to John if he wishes to do this project) At 47, John is in great shape, rides expert level Mountain Bike and is one heck of a great person and I am truly priviledged to have met and kindled a friendship with one of my "heros". He appreciates his fans and is always saying he is amazed that fans still remember him. If any of you should have a question for John, I can forward it to him and post his replies within reason as long as it is nothing that causes controversy and he is ok with the idea He tells me that all the guys are all still friends so I hope that my posting here will be welcome and old fans can find out more about the voice behind the real Fates Warning

Well, that's all your perogative. To stay home if they aren't playing the songs you like, or to not purchase the CD's if they don't feature John Arch. There's no question FW have had their most success as well as their best selling CD's with Ray in the band. I presume if they continued with John Arch they would've either 1. broken up, or 2. been dropped. He's a good singer, yeah, but a very prototypical 80's power metal sound. Even his newer stuff, sounded very 80's (granted, with better songwriting and production, thanks Jim.) Suffice to say, Jim makes the final decision so you really shouldn't be taking up sour grapes with me. I just agree with his decision, then again, like you and everyone else, I have my biases, I just don't LIKE the Arch-era stuff. And I don't think the re-issue of ATG sold more than either D or FXX. I doubt that. Well without Alan Atkins there would never be a Judas Priest, without Charlie Dominici there would never be a Dream Theater, without Al Gore there would never be an internet, etc. I don't like these type of assertions, they really don't say much. But... Anyhow... onward! Get your facts straight, John wrote the songs and Jim collaborating in writing the music, mainly Cheyenne. Give credit where it is due...

Morgana - Thanks for giving us the John update.
Twist of Fate was 2005 not 1995.
Oh, I completely disagree with you regarding Fan expectations. As said somewheres above, Progressive Rock Guitar icon Robert Fripp has a clear saying about this "Expectation Is A Prison."
Then again, Fates isn't a real touring band anymore.
