Or Disconnect, I'm not all that sure. It's the only full-length Fates Warning album I'm missing at this point. What I'd like to know is, would it be the kind of album I'd enjoy if I were very very new to Fates Warning, or is it one of those albums that only the die-hard fans belong buying? I'm going to get it one way or another, I just want to know what I'm buying before I buy it. Could you tell me a few of the standout songs from it so I can get an idea, too? Oh, and tell me if I had it right: is it Disconnected, or Disconnect?

First off, it is "Disconnected." It's a good album but not great compared to some of the others FW has released. One thing I do really like about it is that the songs get progressively better as the album goes on. It starts out alright but most of the early songs sound a bit like fillers, but by the time you get to "Still Remains" you'll be blown away. Good stuff. Hope you enjoy! -Kerrick

I agree, if you like APSOG, you will like Disconnected...although it's a little different. But you need that album for those two long tracks at the end alone!

It's safe to say that I very much love FWX through and through. Knowing that, would that give me more of a reason to pick up Disconnected?

Disconnected is alright. It's better than Brocken and No Exit easily, but not really any of Fates's other albums

But it is a cool album at any rate...

Something From Nothing and Still Remains are already classic songs, music does not get any better. The rest isn´t bad, it´s like the soundtrack of last hour of the Titanic. It´s dark, the stars are shining, everyone´s standing alone - together - and memories and reflections and hopes are floating all over the place as the water slowly fills the ship.

Yes and no. Disconnected stands alone as a Fates Warning experiment, saddling the electronic influences of A Pleasant Shade of Gray with some of the catchier moments of Parallels.
What differs, ultimately, is their loose, rocking style of songwriting, on tracks 2, 3, & 4. This was something new for the band, and probably threw some for a loop. The riffing was also a tad heavier then, oh I dunno, the previous 4 releases, but not in their No Exit vein at all. It is more comparable to the likes of Tool, or even some more aggressive moments of Alice In Chains (what's interesting is the DVD The View From Here, as it shows a scene with Terry Brown listening to the intro riff to "So" with some select band members, and it comes across much, much heavier than what ended up on the album. Therefore, I believe what we hear on Disconnected had much more potential from a production standpoint, and perhaps may have been the reason FWX, the best sounding album by the band to date, was self-produced.)
That being said, there a few (very few) elements that survived Disconnected to comprise what eventually turned out to be FWX. Both are sound releases, but the differences are too great to compare. The best summary I could give you would be this: Disconnected succeeds on the ground that it stretches 5 songs (lyrically) out into an album with a few solid musical ideas. Conversely FWX succeeds by doing the opposite, which is giving the listener 9 songs (lyrically) all with unique identities, and very divergent musical paths within each song itself.
Hope you enjoy it

The View From Here has some interesting Disconnected-clips that could have worked on cd. When Ray is singing in the instrumental pieces, for example. I think i need to watch that dvd again and re-fresh my memory.
