Always one of my favorite FW releases, I don't know why this one is evokes such ambivalence even from the band. This release is probably ALMOST as strong as PARALLELS (my favorite FW CD) and definitely more progressive. An invigorating combination of the styles of PS and P, it's definitely the most under-rated CD in the entire FW catalog. A wide variety of song styles, a diverse range of emotional and evocative compositions, and some incredible performances all around. Still rates a 8.5 - 9 out of 10 for me.
I dug it out the other day, and I still can't stop spinning this one, and though it's always been a great CD, I definitely KNOW why I miss FAresti in the band: his solos and songwriting are just good counterpoint to Jim's. If FW were going to do ANYTHING, bring back Frank as a full-time member, THEN continue to employ Zonder in the studio and make SURE to exploit Kevin Moore as a studio keyboardist.

Wow, and I thought I was the only one who really likes Inside Out! It's definitely one of my favorites of Fates' catalog. And it is for sure way too under-rated. My favorites are "Pale Fire," "Face the Fear," and of course "Monument." -Kerrick

I LOVE INSIDE OUT!!! Every song is a winner. At the top of my Fates list. And I totally agree with bringing Frank back full time. He is a better lead guitarist than Jim, and Jim is the backbone and songwriter. They compliment each other so well. And Fates live is so much better with the fuller sound that the 2nd guitar brings. When I saw them on the No Exit tour it was amazing to see them together, flipping back and forth from acoustic to electric and just plain kicking ass.
I think some people rate this low because THEY ARE AFRAID TO FACE THE FEAR!!! #git#

Agree on all points! Great album and I will break it out tomorrow, been long enough. The spanish style guitar solo on "Monument" is awesome! Great writing beginning to end. ;D

I was thinking the same thing... Jim's the better songwriter, but Frank's got the diverse and shred chops. No doubt his presence would be an injection of style and substance to the band, again. And damn.... but if you ask ME "Pale Fire", "Shelter Me" and "Face the Fear" had SMASH HIT written all over them.
Damn, I love "Monument" as well... up there with "Eleventh Hour" as the definiteive FW track, and an almost perfect merging of commercial and progressive aspects of contemporary PROGRESSIVE metal.

The Strand was one of the first FW songs I fell in love with. Anyone know if they ever played that one live? Seems like one of their least popular tracks. I miss non-industrial Fates

Honestly, I'm not sure. They might've played that one live in NY back in the early 90's at their Roxy gig, but I don't recall... I would go over great though they'd need Frank back in the saddle of course.
