I'm going to re-state the obvious, but let me say that until today, I had never looked at things this way before. Take note:
2 albums... then... ATG = one band member lost No Exit = one band member lost Perfect Symmetry = one member lost Then 2 albums... then... APSOG = TWO more members lost.
I'm amazed. First, that any band would go through such an extreme lineup change. Second, that any band that would do so would even survive.
There are probably many factors about "why the band never made it as huge as _________," but certainly this constant lineup change is a serious factor.

The odds are still better than Napalm Death, whose FIRST side of Scum (their 1987 debut recording, natch) has NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON in the lineup who also recorded the second half of that album.

Stratovarius is another band who has no original members in their current lineup. (Tolkki joined the band like in 86). He booted the last original guys right before Episode.

YES is another Band who overcame the odds of fairly constant lineup changes.

Squire and Anderson were always there, though.

I always got a kick out of the liner notes for Savatage's _Handful of Rain_. ZERO original band members. (Although Jon played a part in creating HoR, he wasn't one of the official band members.)

KISS is another one. That's not really Gene or Paul. They're clones. Gene's too busy making bad TV shows and gangsta-rap-type videos to do any touring. As for Paul, I think he rediscovered his roots and now sculpts his hair as a yarmulka.
I guess they figured Ace Frehely wasn't worth cloning, and that Eric Carr was only worth a bobblehead.
I believe Aerosmith recorded an album with neither Perry nor Whitford.
