Just "discovered" him, and "WOW" - i love this, and i´m not even a jazz lover (untill now obviously). I think the stuff he did with Joni Mitchell and Weather Report is just superb and amazing, not to mention the "Word of mouth" bigband solo album. Tragic though about his death ... but i guess that is quite typical for genius artists - they have it all and throws it away.

quite a fan, myself.
Friends of mine, when I lived in Ft. Lauderdale knew him personally, and had many a story to tell.

I remember years ago (high school) the bassist in the band with me played me his first solo album and while I liked it, it didn't soak in at the time of what he was doing. I also didn't play bass back then, just guitar. But 4 or 5 years ago, when I started playing bass, it was like a HUGE slap to the head. He's probably my biggest influence on bass.
The biography out there is also a pretty good read. It tends to focus more on the later years of his life, which is a rough read, but it does open up his life a bit more.

Yeah, there are some stories about this guy ... like his first encounter with Weather Reports Joe Zawinul: "Mr. Zawinul, I enjoyed the consert (and so on). My name is John Francis Pastorius the third, and i`m the worlds greatest bass player." Zawinul naturally belived he was mad, and told him to stay away.
