It´s been labeled as an instant classic, i don´t know about that but i do know it´s a huge improvement. Superb vocals and some powerful songs. The lyrics are a joke, the guitarist still think YnGwie is God, (LOL).
Anyway ten times better than Divine Wings.. which is a pure pore power metal. With some pretty awful disgusting neo-classical shit going on. I remember how people raved about it, the question is what do they think now? And have they ever heard about a band called Rainbow?

I borrowed a couple of Malmsteen cd´s from a friend and i was wrong about our friend Yngwie. My brothers´s best friend is also a HUGE Malmsteen fan so was about time to actually listen to the man. And the man´s got an amazing talent. Not far behind Roth and Blackmore. Seriously. The harmonies. The melodies. Addictive.
Oddysey has got some great songs and some sickly beautiful guitars on it. Joe Lynn Turner on vocals.. NOT a great choice. The man´s pop singer for heavens sake. Marching Out is pretty cool heavy metal, i wouldn´t call it a classic, but pretty cool nonetheless. Fire and Ice, patchy as hell, my sister actually bought this when it came out, believe it or not, i like half of the songs. Same with Eclipse. Magnum Opus, like the music, but the vocals are boring, boring, boring. I´m gonna get Trilogy soon, it´s supposed to be his best.

I just listened to the new Symphony X CD the other day and it is unbelievably fantastic.

Album of the year? Maybe, and at least twice as good as Systematic Chaos, IMO. Perhaps time to check out the other SX albums from 2000 and 2002....
I really like the new Exodus too, as i finished my review "... Exodus once again reeks pavement, vengeance and rebelion."

Yngwie's best album is easily Rising Force.
Millenium is excellent, and Alchemy is pretty good too.

The debut with Soto on vox.. Malmsteen freaks claim Trilogy to be the classic. Listened to some tracks from Seventh Sign which i thought were great, emotional stuff. Apparently he´s dedicated some songs to his brother who died 1988.

I might agree that Paradise Lost is better then The Divine Wings of Tragedy, at least all songs on the new album are more mature than the latter's 20-minute title track (though I would say I have even more trouble with the title track of The Odyssey, but that's another story). "Seven" and the last track are my favorites (though ironically the last track is in itself sort of a Divine Wings sequel).
Not sure I would agree that the album is significantly better than Systematic Chaos--I enjoy both quite a bit, though both have just a few boring moments here and there. The best of the year, for me, would have to be Dark Tranquillity's Fiction, followed closely by Redemption's The Origins of Ruin.
Malmsteen's Alchemy is pretty good, but I think the best Malmsteen album is Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra. A lot of his other stuff sort of leaves me cold, feels like too much of an exercise. (But that is just my opinion, and not necessarily the most informed one... I have not heard that many of his albums in their entirety, just a lot of songs here and there.)

Good to see you here, Anton, you should post more often, i always respect your opinion.. .. i´ve changed mine regarding Systematic Chaos Vs. Paradise Lost. SX is just too much power metal for me, a genre that i just cannot stand. Although it´s a huge improvement from Divine Wings, ít has a power metal tendence towards the end. Systematic Chaos is a great achivement, only one song is really, really boring and you know which one.
Redemption as second? Isnt´it power progressive metal. What has power got to do with progressive anyway?
BTW: what do you think about Elfriede Jelniek? She´s a nothing but a genius, if you ask me.
Still haven´t heard the new Dark Tranquillity, maybe it´s time to check it out.

The album was fun. I listen to it from time to time.
For some reason, though, I can't seem to really get into the band that much. I just like to listen to an album every once in a while.

But they forgot to make the album balanced. First ther´s one angry power progressive song, then there´s another, and then surpirise, surprise we have another fucking power metal song, p-l-e-a-s-e.
Symphony X are veterans and should know better than to waste my time with an identical song formula.
