Persephone's Dream: First song... "Threnody"... wow! This is a great song, kinda Fates Warningish in the vocal melody style, which I love, and a very dark, moody and gothic vibe. Haven't listened to the REST of the song yet, but so far, the production is pretty darn good and the instrumentation mix sounds deliberate and balanced. Can't wait to delve into the rest of this.
Rush/Snakes and Arrows: Disappointing. I don't find it any better or worse than VT or TFE, both of which were rather bland to some degree, although, at least VT had some immediately catchy melodies (Nocturne, Out of the Cradle, Earthshine.) I found 2 cool songs (namely Working Them Angels, The Larger Bowl), but my first impression after the inaugural listen was exactly that: disappointing. The production and mixing sounds great, though!
There's an expotential improvement in the MIX of S&A compared to VT (and even TfE was a little dry) I just wish the songwriting was better... actually, let me rephrase, I wish the vocal melodies were better. I do agree that I would love the hear the return of the majestic keyboards and that lush, full, complex Rush sound I prefered on Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, Hold Your Fire and Signals. Then again, Counterparts was basically keyboard free, but everything seemed to gel well on THAT CD.
This could take time to grow on me, but after 5-6 listens, I generally get a pretty good overall impression, and so far, it's disappointment of the year. It rates a C+ for me.

Hey Scott! Dude, thanks for the props on "Threnody". It's the only song on the album I wrote all of the lyrics and melodies for, so I kind of consider it my baby. hehe Very honored to get a favorable comparison to Fates on the melody lines... the intent was to go for a female Ray kind of take, so I think I can now say I got pretty darn close. Too cool! Can't wait to hear the rest of your thoughts on it, my man. It's been a lonnnng time coming, so I hope it turns out it was worth the wait! I'm working on a compilation track of all the songs (for promo purposes) and should have more info to post/promote very soon. Release is officially the 12th. Booyah!

Oops... poster THIS in the WRONG forum area. Feel free to MOVE it if possible, Colleen.
Anyhow, yeah, from the first listen, that song grabbed me. That's a good sign! ;-) VERY strong melody. And yeah, Rowen mentioned something about that being "your" song. I think the Ray approach is very evident, not to mention powerful. Good opening track too, not too much of an intro and then it begins.
