I love grunge. And i´m not joking about Grÿche. Gotta lova Hear..." and also Tribe. But for me it´s fairly easy. Soundgarden were the best. Can´t get enough of their songs, what a shame Cornell is wasting all is lungs in Audioslave.
Most underrated band was Screaming Trees. Beautiful ugliness.
Of Course grunge never existed. Punkrock and 70´s hard rock combined created the Seattle-scene.

Who was The Fluid???
I'm a fan of Ryche's later albums, except Q2K), but I also loved the rest of the poll choices.
Where's Mudhoney or The Melvins?

I loved grunge back in the day. But I recently went back and listened to PJ, AIC, and a few other bands of that era. It didn't hold up. But there's still a soft spot in my heart for it.
The best early-90s Seattle band? Nevermore. No question. Fifteen years later, they are one of the finest bands in metal.

I went with AiC although I'd probably call them doom metal before Grunge.

Gonzo: maybe you should listen to Badmotorfinger and Superunknown. Classic stuff. Louder Than Love isn´t a masterpiece but it´s still fun. If you like high pitched harsh vocals that is.
I forgot about the Melvins but here are The Fluid: reached a genesis on purplemetalflakemusic , as the Denver band finally found a hard rock style that both separated it from the rest of its Sub Pop peers and improved upon its thinner-sounding earlier efforts. Of course, due to horrible label backing at Hollywood Records, the group disbanded after this. Unlike a large part of the original Sub Pop scene, who borrowed heavily from '70s heavy metal and punk (Nirvana , Melvins , Tad ), The Fluid embraced a full-throttle MC5 approach with the dual guitar attack of Richard Kulwicki and James Clower . The Fluid concentrated on the music, making purplemetalflakemusic a damn good blast of rock & roll energy.
Have only heard some songs on the radio but they were brilliant, IMO. Someday i have to get the albums.
Alice in Chains studioalbums were good but uneven. Facelift is pure heavy metal with clean guitars. Their last cd was much grungier, guitars dirty and unclean and Laynes vocals sound like Cobains. It has some boring songs but the best ones are magical, Heaven Beside You and Godam.

chimaera:
Never got into Soundgarden. Not a bad band, but after spinning LTL, BMF and Superunknown back in eighth or ninth grade, I only found one song I liked. (It was 'The Day I Tried to Live"). So I left the last album alone.
AIC albums were great, but spotty. But someone said that already. I didn't care for the self-titled. In fact, I hated it. But I really wanted to hear that first post-Layne reunion they did with Pat Lachman. I love that dude's voice.
I love what Chris DeGarmo said about AIC. "I fly fucking PLANES with Jerry Cantrell. Alice in Chains is NOT alternative."

Had to go with AiC also, it's a pretty close call between them and Soundgarden though. I think both Cornell and Staley were incredible vocalists in their primes. And the bands both made great music, even if it wasn't all great. Do still have a soft spot for "Ten" from PJ, not right when it came out...but a little while after it was one of those albums that got me through a pretty tough time. Still holds up for me now, but not much else from them ever bowled me over. Edit, should make some comment about Nirvana. I liked quite a bit of the older stuff, pre-"Nevermind"...so damn down and dirty. One reason I liked "Nevermind" was a lot of it was fairly easy stuff to drum to, good warm up stuff and right when it came out I was just starting to play on a pretty regular basis...so there were a lot of songs that got my coordination going again. Before I knew it I was pumpin' out some Slayer and Hades.... #rockin# #drummer#
