"Home" is one of my least favorite DT songs. Worst song on SFAM.

I'm in the group of people who think the last two Dream Theater CDs have been frelling brilliant. I had stopped listening to the group a while ago but Train Of Thought and Octavarium brought me back into the fold. It ranked #2 on my best of 2005 list. REVIEW LINK

the album "Octavarium" to me, like APSOG is one long song. The title track. I believe there wasn't AS much put into the other tracks as they were meant to be support tracks. Though saying that, "These Walls" was/is great, and i do admire the complexity of Panic Attack. But ya, Octavarium is the epic at the end. Which truely is an epic. The only real weak point is Rudess. He's lost his touch. Never was a touch on Moore anyway.

The last seven songs kind of spoils it, otherwise: brilliant.

I´m glad you like it, that´s a good thing. I can´t stand it. The only word and adjective i can think of is HEAVY-HANDED. I checked the library and the definition of heavy-handed was Octavarium, the song by a band called Dream Thaeter.

The album was not quite as empty as Train of Thought, but there is little in it that really stuck with me. "Never Enough" is the best song by far, with drive and a nicely established sense of atmosphere, and "Sacrificed Sons" is pretty impressive; but I don't really care to listen to any of the other songs again (even though if I did, I would not be in any way irritated).
Unlike many people, I did like the second CD of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, but all Dream Theater compositions that I liked since Scenes From a Memory sound like they've stumbled upon them by accident, while their main operative mode has been that of clunky, heavy-handed songwriting that only happened because a band has got to keep releasing CD's, and not because they really had something substantial to say.
It's been one long downward spiral for the band into self-indulgence and apathy, and even Scenes From a Memory already began to show traces of that. It is a norm accepted by the majority that Falling Into Infinity is to be dismissed outright (even though many of those same people would easily name half of the album's songs as classics when mentioned separately). However, I feel that Falling Into Infinity is by far more focused and inspired than anything that came after, when Dream Theater started to pay too much attention to their own reputation as the world's leading progressive metal band and too little attention to the factors that made them into one in the first place--that is, a sense of adventure, a need to develop and change, and genuinely felt emotions and ideas that had to be put into music not because that's what Dream Theater does, but because life would be too difficult for these people without that outlet of self-expression.

As usual i have to agree with about 95% of what you´re saying. The third paragraph is spot on. Couple of points, though.
I hated Train of Thought for a long time then i ended up lying in bed, the black dogs running all night, listening to it over and over again. It´s a vulgar display of power, not tasteful but the riffs are really cool and i like the fact that LaBrie´s vocals suck. The ballads are beautiful and not as cheesy as you might think.
SDoiT is as patchy as it gets. I love it´s icy atmosphere, the keyboards are actually innovative. The Grande Finale is an epic masterpiece.
Did you know that DT signed with Roadrunner yesterdey. Systematic Chaos out in june. 100% McDonald prog. 100% clean vocals.

"McDonald prog" is a nice term. Surprisingly, it does not stand for simplicity, but for self-indulgence and not knowing when to scale back.
I'm still looking forward to the new album. Roadrunner seems to be signing a lot of good bands lately. I wonder if they could influence Dream Theater a little bit to be a bit more thoughtful and restrained in their songwriting.
I agree with you about "The Grand Finale." There are a lot of things to like in Six Degrees, it's just that the album does not make me feel that Dream Theater necessarily knew what those were.

Yeah, i shouldn´t dismiss it before i have it, that´s a mistake.
"Stephen King prog" could work as well. DT are trying hard to please the kids with sacharine and aspartame and all kinds of dangerous sugar. Can´t decide wheter i´d give Six Degrees.." five or six points.

I dunno. I'd give both 6 Degrees and Train of Thought automatic Fs and possibly an expulsion to Dream Theater for crass plagiarism.
I've said a long while now that Octavarium is only a C grade effort, but compared to the 2 previous is a giant accomplishment.
So, I'll go into the new album skeptically but not pessimistically
