To answer your question from before, yes I did give Dream Theater positive reviews on Fox's site, at least for the albums that I though deserved them. Since then, I've had little or no tolerance for the band or their brand of "enlightned" fans, who drool over every Dream Theater tid-bit far worse than any flannel wearing hippy at a 1993 Pear Jam concert.
"A Change of Seasons" was good, but paled in comparison to the bootleg version I have with Kevin Moore on it, and this was the point that I realized that Derek Sherinian may have been the wrong choice for that band, and Moore was the best fit ... regardless of whatever "musical differences" they were experiencing. Moore's direction may have changed, but I'm sure what they would have created together would have been far more interesting than what they have done since. I think they should have just rolled with what their instincts told them to.
So that's it in a nutshell.
hope that helps

I hear ya completely. I like a lot of DT and was going to put up a thread for the controversy to begin. But at the same time, they have done a lot that I can live without. "A Change of Seasons", the song...is great IMO. Probably their best work, along with select songs from the other albums.
I also don't like what they did with Sherinian. What do you think of Ruddess?
I'll put up a thread for them eventually, I've had a lot of thoughts recently that would get a discussion going.

I've only listened to Scenes From a Memory once, and wasn't too impressed with that. Bored to tears actually, except for that little ragtime bit in one of those long instrumentals. I haven't given much of a shit to even bother listening to the stuff that's been released since.
Dream Theater has since fallen into the same category for me as Metallica. Sure, they may have talent and play some killer songs in the live set ... but they don't even come close to capturing my interest with their studio output anymore.

Yeah, that ragtime bit is a trip. I do like "Beyond this Life", although it has some sappy parts. "Home" is a great song IMO even with the flashback to "Metropolis". But as far as good songs beginning to end...that's about it. Some of the others have great parts...but they blow it somewhere along the line. Seems to be the case with a lot of their stuff.
Generally, they don't seem to have a great full album for me. Even "Awake" has some boring/sappy parts with good or great(Lie, Scarred) songs scattered throughout.
"Train of Thought" might be the closest to a straight through good album for me...I know that may be unpopular, but I like the classic metal influence. And I dig Ruddess's piano work on it.

Scenes from a Memory is a stellar album. The best of the post Moore era. Then 6 Degrees came out...Boring..... zzzzzzzzzz
My Favorite DT albums are Scenes from a Memory, Awake and Images and Words.

Seth, you're completely wrong to enjoy that plagiarizing piece of garbage they call Train of Thought. Dream Theater also flunked basic songwriting on 6 pieces of dogshit.
Falling Into Infinity had some promise to it, but all the corporate mindgames Elektra pushed (Desmond Child!!!, and jealousy songs lke Just Let Me Breathe, and tripe like Lines in the Sand) is why most people give that a poor rating. Same as Ryche's HitNF, regardless of the quality songs found on both albums.
Dream Theater is done, dead, as painfully useless as more years of {thoughts moved to the political forum}

Of course it's up to individual taste...and I do think there are better songs on some of the other albums. But those albums don't keep my attention straight through as much as ToT. That's about as much of a defense as I can muster. Seth

well I might as well throw my 2 cents in on this one, While I am basically a old school thrash/speed fan I do appreciate other types of 'metal' such as prog based stuff. Seth has burned me a few different DT discs ,and while I'm no expert on their catalog, I agree with Seth , they have some great songs on different discs and the best IMO is 'train of thought' due to the overall 'heaviness' of it. My main problem with them as a band is the long (overblown, IMO) soloing in just about every song, too much showing off without enough 'feeling' especially with the keyboards. I'm not a big keyboard fan, little straight piano or evil sounding organ to add a little "feeling' to songs but not the 'space alien' syntheiser stuff. They ain't no FW that's for sure

They ain't no FW that's for sure Very true. I completely understand the negative opinions that some have for them. They're the kind of band that people either love or hate...kinda like Tool, right Marv?... But I do have a middle of the road opinion of them. Like I said, for someone like me who likes instrumental music(even if the soloing is overboard sometimes)...they have some draw. If anything just for Portnoy. In know my best bet is to get into Liquid Tension Experiment, which I will do eventually...probably after the first of the year. Seth

Most over there had either the "they're the be all end all" opinion...or they hated them profoundly. We had the middle of the road opinion which IMO is the best one. Seth
