As if the other tunes that I have given reviews of didn't impress me enough, Fates Warning once again blows me away. Listening to these tracks (and others like "Last Call" from the Misfit demo days) have given me a feeling, circa 2010, like I am re-discovering my favorite band all over again. This song, "Under the Milky Way", is a cover tune from the late 80's from The Church, and had been well known within the alternative/modern rock circles. Covers have been done by everyone from Seven Nations to the Killers. The original is fantastic, even, for its time (with the exception of that odd use of the bagpipe, it sounds like). Fates Warning's version is on such another plane, I am rendered speechless just listening to it over and over and over again. (here is the original: www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-mQyRuHIuA&feature=related) And here is Fates Warning's version: www.youtube.com/watch?v=abyQ3YlRnBE Ray's voice weaves in and out of the amazing melodies of organic/acoustic sounds, coupled with some of the modern electronic sounds that sound more pronounced than anything that The Church had in mind. Not bad for a band who had written a caffeinated speed metal song, once upon a time, called "Anarchy Divine" :-) Granted, "Under the Milky Way" is more along the lines of Fates's style with the song "Wish" than anything else, but their performance on this song really nailed it. And I mean nailed it. Happy listening, for all those who are interested in exploring these lost gems :-) thraxhead
