I will not go into my opinions about Queensryche, other than to deny their existence in my current musical catalogue, and also to disagree with those who believe they've done anything worth spending money on after 1988.Opinions, opinions. Some would say the same thing about FW... Quite frankly, Empire and Promised Land were great records, with Empire being exactly what FW attempted to accomplish with Parallels...and Promised Land exactly what FW tried to accomplish (in my opinion of course) with APSOG. The bands have similar aspects up through QR's Promised Land. After that, QR went more mainstream (or attempted to), whereas FW went more progressive. But while you may not like Queensryche, it's pretty funny to say anything past 1988 may not be worth spending money on, particularly since Empire (1990) and Promised Land (1994) were exactly the style of albums Fates Warning put out (and weren't quite as good).

Ok, after such a crude statement, I find it much too hard to keep silent. Obviously this is a Fates board so I take some offense to this being posted here. Anyway I am going to chime in here and explain how I see things. Fist I will say I did purchase Warning when it came out. I thought it was good. I never purchased another. Now let me get to the point that probably every Fates fan can relate to. This group started out without the slick commercial edge many were aiming at. They simply were writing some strong material. Go back to the early eighties and you can even see that Night On Brocken was ahead of the pack. Yeah it may have been more raw than Warning but I preferd it because it was raw and to put it simple kicked ass. Now lets move to Spectre Within. This is where Fates really crushed everyone else that year. Just take a look at BNR, and don't tell me this guy is not legit, He knows his metal. www.bnrmetal.com/v2/topten.php?Year=1985If you don't believe him look at the internet votes. Now just to remind everyone here this is not intended to be a contest, I am just pointing out the obvious here. Look at 1986 and you get the same results, still rated higher. So here is a point I am getting to. Fates always was much deeper and especially on Spectre darker, which I believe is critical to a good dose of metal. I believe that is what gives them a lot of their appeal. Just go back and listen to the intro of Pirates Of the Underground, then the groove and guitar tone after the break. That was genius and exactly what I was talking about. Listen to Epitaph, that is haunting, listen to the break in the middle of Giants Lore, I could go on but I really don't think it would be necessary. Now lets move ahead. Is there really any comparison to No Exit and Perfect Symmetry? Then the comparisons come back as we move into Parallels and inside out. These were probably their most commercial releases but also incredible material. No "Jet City Woman or Silent Lucidity" on those releases and thank god for that. Get Disconnected and you will see that Still Remains is worth the price of the cd in itself, but also take notice of the dark feel and the thick heavy guitars. Then FWX, listen to Wish, if that song does not move you I don't know what will and yes once again a nice dose of darkness. There is also A Handful of doubt and plenty more. Lets stop the comparisons and realize that Fates, although superior, gets compared by people who know little about Fates and have heard that other bands radio songs far to many times.

For me, Emire is Q`s best record to date. Quite different than Parallels and not quite as musically intriguing as the latter. Promised land was a downfall for there (and nothing like FW ... really). But what a great period the early nineties was for prog music! I mean, Q. at its height, Paralles from FW, and when DT when they were at their best (the Kevin period). And then Cynic ... After that i think FW kept on growing musically while DT and Q got more and more mono
