Ohh, you have the entire Porcupine Tree catalogue? I'm kind of new to Porcupine Tree, I've only heard the two most recent releases, and Lightbulb Sun - LS is definitely my favorite, though I like them all. Which album should I check out next? I've heard good things about Stupid Dream, so I was thinking of getting that one soon.
I guess with V34 I'm gonna have to listen to it without thinking "Porcupine Tree" if I don't want to be prejudiced. Is it at least an enjoyable listen?

The only part of "Voyage 34" I've heard is one song(title track I think?) off the "Stars Die" double compilation. There's much to be read in the booklet from those CDs that explains everything they did up through "Signify", and they go into detail about V34. Didn't they get much or all of the spoken parts from a documentary that was done in the '60s Ben? I don't have it here to read, but I think that's what they said. Then they did a bunch of trippy music with the clips from the show mixed in. That song is pretty cool, almost grabbed the album on-line awhile ago and got "Coma Divine" instead. That's one I would recommend completely from them, awesome live album...but it's mostly songs from "The Sky Moves Sideways" and "Signify" with a few others thrown in.
I would recommend those albums as well as "Stupid Dream" which is excellent. Can't comment on anything prior to TSMS except the tracks I've heard on the compilation, the early stuff was mostly Steven Wilson messin' around with synths and electronic stuff...they were complete songs though that are pretty good.
Went off topic a bit...oops... #doh# There's a PT thread in the Part of the Machine forum, we can pick it up there if you can find it or start a new one.
I love PT though... #notworthy# #hardrock# #cheers#

okay, you're right, back to Fates Warning with this thread! I'll keep the PT stuff to the existing thread if I can find it.
Is the rest of their stuff much the same style as Disconnected, or do they leap around a bit?

You will hear some common link in all of the music, but their albums are all quite different. They take a different approach on every new album they release. It's what has kept them fresh all these years. Disconnected isn't as progressive as many of their albums except for maybe the song Still Remains. Perfect Symmetry takes that nod as the most progressive, just a technical masterpiece. APSOG is their Epic... Inside Out is a lyrical 10, and the older Stuff is HArd!

Disconnected was a departure of style for them, and a much needed one, in my opinion. I would say it would be closer to the No Exit stuff, without the speed or the teeth. The distortion is much more prevalent, and the loose, carefree rocking style on Disconnected was territory that was completely new to the band.
As for their other material in the Early Zonder Era, the song "Left Here" from FWX would be a better gauge for an idea of what they sounded like mid-career (a time when Frank Aresti, on lead, added a dimension to the band which is now sadly lacking) A Pleasant Shade of Gray tries to bridge their earlier jazz/progressive rock vibe with the new electronic/keys sound.
The Zimmerman Era is some highly technical metal, 80's style. High vox, riffs all over the place, majestic leads and lyrics to match the intensity. Fates Warning played metal without a home, opting for their own unique brand of skullcrushing that couldn't be pinpointed (which is probably why I like it). Awaken the Guardian was probably the most original sounding recording of its day, although usually people either love it or hate, and rarely are they inbetween about their feelings towards it.
Keep spinning. I sometimes wish I could relive the whole experience of listening to this band for the first time.

A friend at school made me a mix tape of them, the first song I heard was "Kyrie Eliason", when the main riff kicked in and Arch's voice...I was blown away. Next one was "Orphan Gypsy", even better and still remains my favorite all time FW song. I think APSOG and "Disconnected" could be put into an era of their own...the 'Kevin Moore moody key and piano' era. Maybe the absence of that and Aresti from the older albums is why "FWX" falls a little short of those for me. Gonna have to go back and do an old school marathon this week... #hardrock# #rockin# #git# Seth

I don't think the "Kevin Moore factor" can be overstated enough in regards to his work with FW and his former band. There's something about his work that gives a sense of continuity from song to song within an album -- even if the album isn't necessarily a concept album.

Kevin Moore's keyboard contributions are almost IDENTICAL to the form of contribution X (err, Frank) would have given, most likely note for note

Speaking of, did he write his own keyboard parts? I definitely heard a lot of KevMo's style in Disconnected Pt. 2.

My recommendation is to get EVERY Fates Warning CD with Ray Alder on it, ASAP. If that's not immediately financially feasible (or responsible) then, go for INSIDE OUT, PLEASANT SHADE OF GRAY, PERFECT SYMMETRY, DISCONNECTED, PARALLELS and FWX (although that is NOT my order of preference, it just seemed an appropriate manner in which to familiarize yourself with the band.)

I have been a FW fan since the day I heard No Exit, back in 198?. So, I suggest getting that album, after you have digested the three great albums you have. You will find differences in each FW cd, and that is what makes them the special band that they are. Parallels is a great cd, so think about that one, too. Anyways, just get the whole catalog in time, you won't be sorry!

Don't listen to Scott. He's in love with Ray and wants you to be too.
It's OK Scott .... back to bed now. Your head won't hurt as much in the morning.
