I'm surprised - and relieved - that there were no terrorist strikes, assassination attempts, etc. Don't know much in the way of protests; I was told there would be plenty, but I only caught a glimpse of coverage on BBC. I'm trying to be optimistic about Bush's second term - could be possibly do any worse than last time? - but his idea of SS reform rubs me the wrong way. In either case I find it completely fucking obscene that his ten-day party is costing us over $40 million. That's sick. Put that money in either the defense or SS bugets.

(snip)- but his idea of SS reform rubs me the wrong way. In either case I find it completely fucking obscene (snip) Don't have much to say, other than I've begun reading Phillip Roth's "The Plot Against America", which concerns a sceptical Jewish population in alternate-1930s//40s suburban northeastern NJ (where I live, btw) under the leadership of Charles Lindburgh, who would sign a Non-Aggression pact with Hitler. Lindburgh was a notorious Nazi Sympathizer back then. So the idea of an American president wanting "SS Reform" makes me think less of health care plans, and more of Fascist Military stormtroopers enforcing genocidal doctrines.

I'm pretty disturbed by this huge celebration in this time of war and uncertainty. Obviously can't say it's just a Bush or Republican thing...who knows what Kerry woulda done. Either way, it's ridiculous...there are far more important things that the money could be spent on, providing they really give a shit about the troops. Doesn't seem like it...although they did have a prayer service for them, that should help tremedously... Even during peace time...why all the hoopla and unnecessary spending? We have domestic issues that need attention and $$, and they're not going away. Just in case the politicians didn't know that. Seth

if it makes you feel any better, you and I only had to come up with about 12 million for security, the rest is all private donations from corporations and individuals hoping to gain the president's ear

Silly Humans, hehe! This celebration happens every four years Like clockwork, no matter who's in office. I found Bush's speech to be very inspiring. Lofty goals never hurt anyone.

I made a point of saying there are no party lines in this disgusting display. I can't even fathom 40 mil for anything that doesn't help someone who needs help. These are the exact things that make me despise politicians in general and give me such low confidence in human nature. Seth

So that speech of hope to the oppressed of the world was nothing at all. Thats why I dispise silly humans. I'm just kidding Seth. We are the richest nation on the face of the planet. We can afford to have a celebration of our democratic institutions and affirm the presidents vow to uphold the constitution every 4 years. We give like no other nation on the planet or in the history of mankind for that matter. And our citizens give to charities like no other.

I'm just not moved or impressed with politicians words. Believe me, I was no fan of Kerry's lip service either.
As far as the money goes, I just feel that kind of over indulgence is a slap in the face of those who suffer in this country everyday. Again, both parties do it...so this isn't anti-Bush, just anti-establishment I guess.
And we may be the richest country in the world, but we're not doing enough to take care of our own people...IMO.

That's all it was , A speech, lots of hot air. We are the richest nation and we need to take care of our problems at home, healthcare and poverty to start. By the way the good ole USA only comes in the middle of the pack when it comes to individuals giving to charties etc i believe Denmark is the most generous nation.

We can afford to have a celebration of our democratic institutions and affirm the presidents vow to uphold the constitution every 4 years. You're asking us to suspend disbelief in the following ways: 1. The Patriot Act and the Ashcroft policy 'upheld' the constiution. 2. Indulgence is okay as long as you can afford it. I'm reminded of two great headlines in The Onion: "Liberties cutrailed in the name of freedom." "Ashcroft: 'Obey'"

The Ashcroft Policy?? What is that! The Patriot act was passed by the legislature. Now think back to the Reno Policy... Now go out and sell your car and give the money to the poor. The inauguration has been happening ever since the beginning of our country. And now somehow it shouldn't happen. Leftist propaganda. No one complained when Clinton was inaugurated. No one complained when Clinton pre-emptively struck Bosnia without UN support. Hypocracy.

Quit smoking that crack, Brett . No one said Bush should not party. We said it was sick that his partying cost so much when the Iraq mess is costing us untold hundreds of millions daily, not to mention financial problems at home. BTW, it's spelled "hypocrisy," though 'hypocracy' does sound like a good way to describe the Bush regime. Nice one! Kinda like 'sarchasm,' the gap between my intellectual witicisms and those people who don't get my jokes. NP: Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache
