Dang... that's a really tough question. I voted "Still Remains" although "Guardian" and "Monument" are really close. On a different day I may have picked one of those. I'm kind of surprised "A Pleasant Shade of Gray XI," "A Handful of Doubt," and "The Ivory Gate of Dreams," weren't on there though.

I refuse to vote, based on the suffocating choices, songwise.

Some other choices for greatest song: I would choose from these. - Afterglow: Strange choice but I have heard nothing By Fates that moves me like this song - Giants Lore (Heart Of Winter): Smooth and excellent, just love that song - Pirates Of The Underground: Simply incredible ass kicking driving metal. That album had such a dark feel to it. - Then the obvious choices like Monument, Ivory Gates, Still Remains, etc..

If it were possible I would vote for all the songs...but I'm choosing Another Prfect Day because it's a masterpiece from the last album and it gives me strength for each day

Quietus! Thanks for putting that one on the list. Its the Gem of the "Ivory Gate of Dreams" for sure! Every so often I put my ancient tape in the boom box and play it over and over and over and over... Quietus is a harmonious balance of all the elements we've come to love about Fates. Slow ballad, moving rhythm, speed thrash. Absolutely perfect.
That said,
"The Arena" is perhaps my all-time favourite song by any group any time.
"Static Acts" follows "The Arena" in brilliance.
"Nothing Left to Say" has just astonishing vocals.
Finally, "Fata Morgana" is a John Arch effort I never tire of hearing.

Come on... everyone knows the best songs would be: old school would have to be Pirates of the Underground. Later on it would have to be Monument. Then of course there are the personal favorites. Obviously you like the record Perfect Symmetry. Let me list my personal favorite. A little odd for for me since I like the heavier music. In FW catalog I think that their most moody and not necessarily the heaviest is their best work. Take a good listen to Afterglow. That piece freaks me out. So dark and moody. Very creepy yet elegant and totally amazing. Go back and listen to Giants Lore. Not many people's pick but what a smooth song so perfectly formed with a nice middle section. That song is a sleeper. Yes as I said before Pirates Of the Underground, that of course is the undisputed heavyweight in their catalog. Can't dispute that. Their damn tour bus was named that even on the Perfect Symmetry tour. But I think that any discussion like this is more personal and individual choice or it wouldn't be much of a discussion. Now with that said, check out Wish. Makes me shudder, and so simple and direct. Damn that is just so good. Now check this out. Go way way back and spin your Night On Brocken record. Consider when this came out. Queue up the song Night On Brocken Now tell me, honestly, was that way ahead of its time or what. Is that song extremely progressive and completely kick your ass. Well I know Jim is not so impressed by his back catalog. Come on Jim stand up and be proud. You guys were the shit. That record gets no credit even from you. Give yourself some credit and at least acknowledge that us fans that have followed you from that first record. You guys were great from the start. Just go back and spin that song. Anyway I am sure there are plenty others like Still Remains and even Point Of View (holy crap what a song), bottom line is this is basically a discussion of personal choice, one great band, and many awesome songs.

Pirates of the Underground isn't even the best song on The Spectre (Specter?) Within. I can't for the life of me remember how it goes. Completely unmemorable.

Perhaps you might want to do yourself a favor and have another listen. Sorry you can't remember one of their best songs. If you can't remember that song then you are not in any position to say it is not even the best song on that record. You obviously don't know that record. And please don't tell me it is the Apparition.

Greatest song? That's a close one. I'd have to say The Apparition, closely followed by Traveler in Time, Exodus, and A Pleasant Shade of Gray (the whole thing). Pirates of the Underground isn't even the best song on The Spectre (Specter?) Within. I can't for the life of me remember how it goes. Completely unmemorable. That's mainly because there's no chorus. I don't find it unmemorable at all, though - in fact, I can remember pretty much the entire thing. It is a wee bit plodding, but it's still a good song. Not the best on Spectre, I'd agree (though Spectre as a whole is incredibly awesome and it's still one of the band's best songs, imo).

Damn near any song on "The Spectre Within" could be argued as the best song of the Arch era IMO. I still maintain it's my favorite album of the 3 Arch, and I'm a bit partial to "Kyrie Eliason" since it was the first song I ever heard from the band. Simply amazing! Agree with the comment of APSOG being one the best 'songs'(whole album) of the catalog. Revisited that a couple weeks ago, still consider it the pinnacle and 'be all-end all' of prog metal albums.

Out of the choices I voted "Still Remains" certainly among my favs....others would be:
The Apparition (John Arch's finest moment, IMO) The Road Goes on Forever The Ivory Gate of Dreams Prelude to Ruin A Handful of Doubt

I would add Epitaph and Prelude to Ruin to the list for the Arch era. And One and Eleventh Hour.
Hard to say whether Quietus should be separate or part of Ivory. Similar to: is Pleasant Shade of Gray one song?
Hard to come up with an overall greatest song. Right now it would be between Epitaph, Ivory Gates, Monument, and Still Remains.
