I am in love with Ray, and though it's not his fault, it has caused great pain in my marriage. The John Arch vs. Ray Alder thread that COULD possibly follow this post (and therefore, begin the great unraveling of the very fabric of existence!) is so inconsequential and insignificant that I suspect millions might die so that a new (albeit dead-horse beating) argument could ensue. While you might find a little something to pine about in the John Arch era-stuff, imho, any Fates post-No Exit is easilly far more worthwhile, your romantic relationships with others notwithstanding. Booyah!

Of course, I didn't mean to bring up the Arch vs. Alder debate for the skillionth (literally, now folks) time. That's the kind of universal disaster in the making we just don't need. But yeah, er... until I hear those words from Ray's mouth, or in song (A paen to Mosher... ah!) I shall just HAVE to take your words for it ladies and gents, lol! Seriously, though, what was this thread about again? -)

Ray will say John Arch is better, but that's cause he's kinda modest

Ray will say John Arch is better, but that's cause he's kinda modest so would I. but Ray is great too. I think Ray is just being honest. but anyway...I would recommend (comparing the albums/taste provided) to start with these: Awaken The Guardian No Exit perfect Symmetry A Pleasant Shade of Gray and then go from there...

ermm.. hey guys. im new. Just started to get into Fates Warning through Queensryche. I first heard them with John Arch on Awaken the Guardian (what a high pitch voice!!) but then i got the Parallels album, and was BLOWN away by Ray Alder's voice. ..WOW Geoff Tate may be my fave vocalist but i wanna sing like Ray. i've since heard the album released before Parallels too, and it ROCKS. ^__^

Welcome! Yeah, Ray has an awesome voice. I actually got into Fates through Redemption, which if you're not familiar with... you need to be ! Here's their website: ivorygate.com/redemption/and their myspace: www.myspace.com/thebandredemptionSo yeah, Ray's the singer and it has members from Symphony X, Prymary, of course Fates Warning, etc. Enjoy! -Kerrick

I still do not hear the resemblance of Fates Warning to Queensryche. On Parallels, maybe during the pre-chorus to "Point of View", you can hear a "Tate-ism" or two, but other than that ....... I dunno. I am at a loss for words on this.
An interview that took place with the band after the release of No Exit addressed this fact, that John Arch had resembled Dickinson, while Alder's approach was now copying Tate, and the interviewers only reference point that he kept bringing up was "In A Word". Jim remarked that while he was unsure about these similarities, perhaps other people may notice them, but there were still 5 other songs on the album. And, then chipped in "I don't think 'The Ivory Gate of Dreams' sounds like Queensryche at all"
Cha-ching! Stick it to them, Jimbo :-)
I will not go into my opinions about Queensryche, other than to deny their existence in my current musical catalogue, and also to disagree with those who believe they've done anything worth spending money on after 1988.

Hello All: I felt compelled to join this discussion having only recently become a HUGE FW fan. I am a longtime metal head and have always known of the band, just never gave them their fair shot. I had Parallels back in college and loved it, then I bought Awaken the Guardian a year ago on a whim just passing it by on a best buy rack...totally fucking blown away by one of the most unique voices I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. Gobbled up the rest of the Arch albums and have recently completed the whole discography...love them all but the first three are my favorites...
Other favorite bands include Blind Guardian, Iron Maiden, Death, Judas Priest, In Flames, Rush, Slayer, Megadeth, Scorps, Whitesnake, YES, Queensryche, VH, Amon Amarth, Evergrey, Children of Bodom...and more of the like. Cheers!
