I've been afraid to buy the new Maiden. For some reason they just seem to disapoint me these days. I can't put my finger on it but they jusr aren't what they used to be. Seems to be the feeling for most long time fans, I'm kinda the same...but I do want to buy this. Based on what I've heard and read, I think it will be worth the purchase. No Agalloch as of yesterday, I feel better though that there's a big thread on the bravewords board about how everyone is waiting. The move is still slowing them down, totally understandable and cool with me as long as it gets here. Ordered Captain Beyond yesterday... ;D

TER is finishing their cross-country move to the new place in Brooklyn.
Mail ordering should pick up quickly soon (like this week).

I got the new Maiden and Metal Church.
Metal Church is solid.
The new Maiden I like, but the first half of the album is kinda boring, the last 4 tracks rock though.

I agree that "These Colours..." and "The Longest Day" aren't that good, but "Brighter than..." is an awesome song, and "The Pilgrim" isn't half bad at all. Although you're right, the second half of that cd owns. -Kerrick

Yeah, overall I think it's a very strong album, but there are a couple of mediocre songs on there. On an unrelated note, I ordered "Against the Seasons" by Woods of Ypres last night. Definitely looking forward to that one coming in! -Kerrick

Is it better than "Weight of the World"? I like that one, more at first though...didn't have a ton of staying power. I ordered "Against the Seasons" by Woods of Ypres last night. Definitely looking forward to that one coming in! -Kerrick Good album, much more straight up black metal than "Pursuit...". But you'll hear where they were going. Man, I can't wait for their new one too! New Agalloch arrived yesterday, got 2 spins in today...about a half on headphones. Does sound like a mix of the first 2, some mellower instrumental stuff and some faster paced rockers. Like the others, it'll take some time to get into I'm sure...but "Falling Snow"(which I've heard before) is real good and another immediate standout is "Not Unlike the Waves"...great song. Looks like these guys will be 3 for 3 for me... ;D Mail's not here yet, hoping Captain Beyond is there...came from a fast shipper in CA. I'm in the mood for some classic prog, been listening to old Priest a lot the last couple days...

Fuck it, I've been killing myself with overtime lately...finally got rewarded with some major haulage. First, got my Captain Beyond album in the mail last night...threw it in the home system for awhile and it's awesome! Nice heavy classic progrock, great guitar, vocals and the drums are tits! Gonna spin it more today doing yardwork, thanks for the link to that youtube Ben...a sure winner... Got out of work a little early yesterday and got a bug up my ass, headed to Best Buy and my music store right down the street. Ended up with the new Maiden, new Katatonia, and new Mastodon(deluxe with the DVD). Only heard a little Maiden so far on the headphones, what I've heard sounds good...sounds like Maiden. Will get plenty of time. Been up since early this morning trying to get a taste of everything, Katatonia sounds pretty heavy...definitely not straying from the VE formula at all. Do think the drums sound great, much busier maybe? The one I had to hear first in the truck and have on the headphones now is the new Mastodon, kept reading one stellar review after another for it...man is it living up to the hype! I think this is going to blow "Leviathan" away for me, seems like much better writing...more interesting rather than just straight heaviness. These guys are talented beyond words, don't even need to mention Dailor on the drums to anyone who's heard him...phenominal... #drummer# Looks like I'm busy for quite awhile with new stuff now. New Agalloch is sounding better and better, may match up to the first 2 even... ;D

Seth - since you like Agalloch, try their OTHER band on The End, Sculptured. "The Spear of the Lily is Aureoled" and "Apollo Ends" are both quirky takes on technical melodic death metal, one with a horn section (Apollo). The difference is that Aggaloch is John Haughm's beast, and Sculptured is Don Anderson's. Meanwhile, JWW has his own universe of strange bands, like Especially Likely Sloth, but you need an intensely dry humour to get into his projects. Nice guy though

Both "Against the Seasons" by Woods of Ypres and "In a Flesh Aquarium" by Unexpect came in yesterday! I've only listened to them each once so far, but I really like both of them (wish the WoY was longer than 1/2 hour though, but that's ok). The WoY cd is pretty much straight up black metal with an acoustic edge to them which really makes their music very emotionally driven (not emo though! haha). And Unexpect is just absolutely insane. But in a very good way. Highly suggest at least checking them out if you're not familiar to them. www.myspace.com/unexpectwww.woodsofypres.ca/v2/index2.html-Kerrick

Seth - since you like Agalloch, try their OTHER band on The End, Sculptured. Just did some reading about them, think I could get into the brass thing if it's done well. The reviews say they are, I think if the writing is on par with Agalloch's...it should be good. Goes on the list... #waiting# (wish the WoY was longer than 1/2 hour though, but that's ok). The WoY cd is pretty much straight up black metal with an acoustic edge to them which really makes their music very emotionally driven (not emo though! haha). Other than the drums, I'm still not loving the first 2 tracks...OK though. But it really kicks in after that till the end, 3-5 are excellent. Just listened to "Pursuit..." in my truck, an absolutely incredible album. I'll be very happy if the new one is close to that. From what David Gold has been saying, it will be a combo of sorts...leaning a little more on the style of the first which he refers to as 'winter metal'. As opposed to the warmer sounds of the 'summer metal' "Pursuit..." I guess. I'm confident it will kick ass either way... #rockin# Have gotten into the new Maiden pretty good now, not blowing me away...but I keep reading a lot of guys who say it'll grow slowly. There are some definite standouts, "Brighter than a Thousand Suns", "The Longest Day" and I think as was mentioned before...the last 4 tracks are probably the best. It's good just being Maiden, maybe better as time goes on. New Katatonia is pretty good IMO, think you said lazy Ben? From a writing standpoint, probably so...nothing new from the last 2 albums and not as good as VE for sure. But it has some pretty good moments, "My Twin" has become a quick favorite, some others like "July", "Soil's Song", and "Leaders" are quality. Might sound even better with time, but I'm quite sure it won't reach VE status. Agalloch, AATG is very slow getting there...more than the others even. Had some quiet time last night when the wife had to step out, laid back with it on the headphones and it's coming together. The early songs are the holdouts, middle to end is very good. Might be hard for them to compete with their first 2, but a good challenge for them. Mastodon is awesome, everyone get "Blood Mountain"!!! Captain Beyond is great too! What's your opinion of the others from them Ben? ;D

10,000 Days by Tool has left a strange impression so far... Have to dig it further, I believe. But the package absolutely rocks!) 13th Step by A Perfect Circle turned out to be a great album, and MJK - a singer even greater than I thought after listening to Tool. Vapor Trails by Rush. Oh, well... I've had the mp3s for a quite long time but finally found the CD in a store recently. Rated mediocre by many, this album is yet the first Rush record I heard, and I loved it, so just couldn't pass by when I saw the CD And, A Matter Of Life And Death by Iron Maiden. A work far better than Dance Of Death, imo. Very progressive, very professional, almost perfect. Still, Paschendale from DoD turned out to be a masterpiece of such brilliance that no song on AMOLAD managed to surpass it...

Still, Paschendale from DoD turned out to be a masterpiece of such brilliance that no song on AMOLAD managed to surpass it... Maybe it still has to grow on me more, but I like Dance of Death more than A Matter of Life and Death by quite a bit. I'm a pretty big Maiden fan and DoD is my favorite (I have all 14 of their studio albums). AMoLaD is really good and I really enjoy listening to it, but there's still no songs that just jump out at me like Rainmaker, Dance of Death, and Paschendale do. However, For the Greater Good of God is an awesome song, as well as Brighter Than a Thousand Suns. DoD still holds #1 for me. -Kerrick
