Virgin Black's newest album freaking rocks. That band can do no wrong. And speaking of absolutely amazing bands, I just got "Three Times Seven On A Pilgrimage" by In The Woods... today. Listening to it right now! Yeah, I like the new VB a lot too...but it hasn't hit the level of "Sombre Romantic" for me yet. Couple other albums I've recently gotten into, Vintersorg's "Visions from the Spiral Generator"...very cool album. Think it will give "Solens Rotter" and maybe even "Till Fjalls" a run, needs more time though. But I'm hearing new things everytime with the keys, excellent stuff. Think "Cosmic Genesis" will be my next purchase to complete the collection. Just got Finntroll's newest "Ur Jordens Djup", my first from them...had to see what they were like. Only 2 spins in and it's pretty damn awesome, a style of folk metal I've really been looking for...which is almost a perfect fusion of Moonsorrow and Korpiklaani. From what I've read, this is much more serious than their previous work...but it's working for me. Will be looking into more from them also.

Dude, "Cosmic Genesis" rocks. I was listening to that album just a little while ago. It's definitely one of my favorites from Vintersorg. I don't know - that one, "Till Fjalls," and "Odenmarkens Son" are all kind of tied for first place for me...

I recently got "The Whore and the Bride" by Synnove. Pretty great stuff. Their guitarist/singer used to play in Virgin Black. There's definitely some VB influences, though Synnove is much more black metal oriented. I'm really digging it. There's not a bad song on the album. www.myspace.com/synnovemetal

My apologies to the board and Colleen, hate that I'm not posting much and don't like to see the board so slow. Life has a way of taking precious time away from fun, family, friends, etc... Hopefully someday we can all pick it up a little with our FW and general music chat. For now, I've got some thoughts on a few new albums I've picked up...and one that I mentioned awhile ago which is.... Vintersorg's "Visions from the Spiral Generator", I have spent more time with it and it is a great album...probably the most creative of his IMO. Can't get over the perfect production, which really helps the subtle keys come through. I did pick up "Cosmic Genesis" awhile ago, it does need more time to form an opinion and comparison to the others. For now though, it's not hitting the level of "Till Fjalls", "Visions...." or "Solens...", but that could change. Has potential for sure, and of course sometimes the best albums take the longest to click. One of my favorite new ones is Moonsorrow's "Tulimyrsky" EP. Man this is a killer album, and certainly not an EP when it comes to length being about 60 minutes long. The title track is 29+ minutes and IMO is much better than the 2 similar length ones on the last full album. This is very catchy and other than the somewhat overly long intro(around 4 minutes before it really kicks in)...it doesn't drag anywhere. Rather it just kicks ass with some great black metal style overpowering the viking. Then there's the cover of Metallica's "For Whom the Bell Tolls", I do like the spin they put on it...adding a little of their flair. But the song itself overran it's course with me years ago, good song but way overplayed by myself back when and in general. So it's cool to hear what they did, but only goes so far when it comes to repeated spins. The next 2 are remixes of older songs from demos, very good songs...again more black than viking, also very catchy and they simply rock. Then the last is another cover from the band Merciless, another very good song although I'm not familiar with the original. Took a little longer to grow on me, but it rounds out a superb album IMO. I did jump on an album from Primordial, "The Gathering Wilderness". Liked it pretty well right away, then took a long break from it before spinning on headphones the other day in full. Really came through great that way, an absolutely excellent album beginning to end. Has this amazing atmosphere, hard to explain...but it takes a bit of the Agalloch style, mixes a touch of My Dying Bride and then does their own unique thing. It's almost a collection of soul crushing lamentations, very powerful and moving with the vocals(maybe not the greatest clean ones, but the growl/yell style is damn good). The guitar riffs are mezmerising, repeating quite a bit at times but it never gets boring. Hard to even classify this by genre, some mix of black/doom...but quite original. Will be getting more from them for sure. Last is of course the mighty Opeth with their newest "Watershed". I liked "Ghost Reveries" pretty well although it didn't have nearly the staying power of most of their other albums. With the exception of "Ghost of Perdition" and "Harlequin Forest" anyway which I consider to be great songs. But this album is a great comeback from that IMO, very good from beginning to end. Did take some time to come around, but the last couple spins were sounding great. Have to make note of Mikael's clean vocals, amazing to hear how he's progressed since the early albums in this category...pitch perfect on this album. I do think at some point he may give up the growls completely and go with a mainly heavy prog style and only clean vocals. Won't be a bad thing, although I'd like to hear more death metal from them first. This album has a good mix, the mellow songs are very good...and when the heavy stuff kicks in, it's crushing. Have to mention Martin Axenrot's drums, filling the incredible Martin Lopez's shoes couldn't have been easy...but this guy is damn good. The album came with a docu-dvd where they focused on the making of and rehearsals, watching all of them jamming is very cool...but they did focus a lot on 'Axe' and it's beyond fun watching him jam. Will be going to see them in October, taking both boys this time and it will be my younger one's first concert. He's 9 and he's ready, not to mention a big Opeth fan...so he's gonna love it. Actually his 9th b-day is a few days after the show, so the timing is perfect and it's remaining a surprise for now. Long as my older one doesn't open his big mouth... ;D

Hey Ben, how's it going? Hoping to try and get on more often, another new work schedule has come my way. A little better in some ways and not as good in others. But I'll be slotting in some BB time when I can. Got a couple more albums recently, have slowly worked up to some longer lunches at work on certain days which allows me to get a full album in on the headphones. So at least 'music time' isn't suffering quite so much. Just got Enslaved's "Ruun" which I've been wanting to get for a long time. One spin in is all, sounds pretty similar to "Isa" which will likely end up being a good thing...doesn't sound like a repetetive copy, but I like the style a lot. Also have one spin in with November's Doom "The Novella Reservoir". My first from them, they have kind of an Amon Amarth style...but a little more versatile with mellow parts, clean vocals, etc... Sounds good so far.

Well, so far only the 1st 3 tracks on "Ruun" have impressed me as much as "Isa" as a whole album. But that could still change, it's a good album for sure...has some work to do catching up to "Isa" for me though. How's "Vertebrae" compared to those 2? New ND album is pretty good, slightly on the simplistic side for me(I generally mean that in the writing not performing dept, and I definitely do in this case). Basically, I can get bored quicker with the straight ahead doom, death, black styles...like most of us I gravitate toward more progressive stuff which can mean so many things these days. But I do like the album up to a point, maybe more with time. A new one I'm working on is High on Fire's "Death is the Communion". Picked it up primarily cuz they're opening for Opeth on Oct. 9th. Again, it would be a style I might not go after...but I am trying to get aquainted with it a lot before the show. Some similarities to Mastodon who I like for their technicality and they're pretty progressive in ways, so the style is working for me. Over several spins I've grown to appreciate the songs, as well as the singer's voice...perfect for the music. The drummer is also very good, so it has it's place for me...and from everything I've read they are very good live. I think this style works good live also if they pull it off, so I'm looking forward to it.

Freaking spam-bots. Whatever. I got all four albums by Empyrium in the mail yesterday and am absolutely loving them. Amazing band. I also have "Dichotomy" by Becoming the Archetype and "Six Waves of Woe" by Forest of Shadows pre-ordered. Looking forward to those albums quite a bit.
EDIT: Hey, did anyone hear about Mike Baker, Shadow Gallery's singer, dying??? He was only 45 years old and had a heart-attack. He was such a great singer and from what I've read, a really great guy. Tragic.
