I must say, twas duly a pleasure to see the following last night, as it will be a time I will never forget: Michael, Alex, Ben Mech, Chris F-5, Gonzo, & Virtual Scott. Rumor had it that Brett (Raiderblack) and Jax was there, but sadly I did not get to meet them
Perhaps, there will be another time to get together again ...
I will also go on record to state that the latest setlist (always a sore spot for me anyway) was rife with nuggets and surprises that I was overjoyed to be witness to. After countless times of seeing this band, never before have they been as sharp as they were last evening, and never had their energy at a live show peaked as much as it did, either. It was like 1990 all over again for them! (the Houston show from 1990 or the New York City show from 1992 was Fates at their true peak - highly recommended viewing). This is good to see.
Anyway, the list!
Disconnected Pt. 1 One Life in Still Water Another Perfect Day A Pleasant Shade of Gray Pt. 3 A Pleasant Shade of Gray Pt. 4 The Eleventh Hour Point of View A Pleasant Shade of Gray Pt. 5 Island in the Stream* Through Different Eyes Still Remains (with Nick van Dyk on keys) Nothing Left to Say* Monument
Encore:
The Ivory Gate of Dreams*
The songs marked with an asterik are ones that I have not witnessed live before last night. Pure class, especially "Island in the Stream", which was my personal favorite moment of the entire evening.
If it were to break this down by minutes per decade (which I will), here is how it played out:
80's - 35 minutes 90's - 40 minutes 00's - 27 minutes
So I really won't complain, because it would ruin the entire thing for me. hahaha.
I have also come to the conclusion that the only potential for Arch songs to be played, at this juncture, is to actually have Arch singing them. This would probably only be in a "farewell tour" type of format with both singers on stage for their respective parts, so I am mixed on how I would wlecome such a notion. In fact, I would rather not even think about it.
Mingling with the Fates crew last night led to some various thought-provoking discussions on this (and many other) topics, and it is probably for the better that the band stick to Alder-era material with Alder singing (something I have argued against for many years). Last night's testament and energy shows that they seem to perform much better with the material they are comfortable with. And it has already been stated ad infinitum that they do not really prefer the material from 1984-1986.
Such is life, no?
Looking forward to the new album, and maybe even a chance to see them again in some live format down the road.
Good night, all
Eternally,

Thanks for the writeup Thrax. It was a damn great setlist, and beyond shocking that they added Island In the Stream, and NOT the Dolly Parton song at that). Progpower kicked ass the whole way. Shame you only saw one or 2 bands.
FYI, there's no space in the BenMech tag. Dunno why that's an issue with people. Jax had all the programs, Stillwater.

in my opinon, that, or a "reunion" tour with the original lineup would go over bigger than anything else that FW has done in the past decade. Face it, many bands these days are doing such tours, and many of those bands have become bigger than ever before. I think FW are long overdue for something like this. There are thousands of die hards out there that want to hear and crave the old material. long long overdue................
